Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea presents Expanded With, an exhibition that looks at the role of photography in contemporary art in recent decades as part of the programme of EXPOSED Torino Foto Festival. The exhibition, set up on the ground floor, mezzanine floor and third floor of the Manica Lunga, brings together works in which the photographic medium is the starting point for investigating differen types of relationship with the landscape. From the performative actions of the 1960s-70s, the exhibition Regione Piemonte | Città di Torino | Città di Rivoli | Fondazione CR includes works by the pioneers of Land Art, Arte Povera and Body Art, as well as the use of photography as a conceptual tool, leading to more contemporary experiences.

“Expanded With – states Marcella Beccaria – investigates the image as an expanded field, quoting the writings of American art theorist Rosalind Krauss. Krauss analyzes how the practice of artists since the 1960s changed the traditional concept of sculpture to “site-construction,” using a variety of media, including photography. Based on these premises, forthe first time the exhibition brings together a significant number of photographic works by international artists in the Collection and on loan to Castello di Rivoli, tracing the close relationship between the use of photography and the developments of contemporary art over the past 50 years.”
Expanded With is part of Expanded, an exhibition in three chapters curated by Marcella Beccaria and Elena Volpato conceived to enhance the photographic nucleus of the Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT Collection on loan to Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea and GAM Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Torino. Proposing a single coherent path, the exhibition is articulated in the venues of Castello di Rivoli, GAM and OGR Torino, and presents photography from three special angles. In addition to Expanded With at Castello di Rivoli, the project includes Expanded Without at the OGR Torino and Expanded – I Paesaggi dell’arte at GAM in Turin. Expanded investigates the image as an expanded field, intentionally citing the writings of American art theorist Rosalind Krauss.
In conjunction with Expanded With, the Sala 18 on the second floor of the museum will host the exhibition Paolo Pellion di Persano. The Simple Story of a Photographer, curated by Marcella Beccaria and Andrea Viliani, which brings together for the first time an important corpus of the artist’s photographs, including many previously unpublished ones, providing an extraordinary narrative from which the artistic vitality of Turin and its territory emerges
Expanded With is part of EXPOSED Torino Foto Festival (2 May – 2 June 2024), Turin’s new international festival of photography promoted by the City of Turin, the Piedmont Region, the Turin Chamber of Commerce, Intesa Sanpaolo, Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo and Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT on behalf of Fondazione CRT and is organised by Fondazione per la Cultura Torino.
