After four successful years, Hallen 05, a partner of Berlin Art Week, is expanding its programme to six exhibitions and 16 participating contemporary art galleries. This year’s edition includes presentations from three private art collections, two major German institutions and one independently curated exhibition. In addition, selected music and performance events will take place throughout the duration of the festival.

For the first time, one of Germany’s currently most active institutions, the Hanover-based Kestner Gesellschaft, will participate and present a special project by Casey Spooner based on his candidacy for the American presidency in 2020. Berlin’s Fluentum is also taking part in Hallen 05 this year with a curated film programme featuring works from its collection. The Berlinische Galerie returns to the festival and presents a current 28-minute film by Berlin-based artist Yalda Afsah. In cooperation with ACCEA, the Armenian Centre for Contemporary Experimental Art in Yerevan, the HK – Art Gallery is showing an exhibition of young Armenian artists, curated by Nathalie Hoyos and Rainald Schumacher.

The Parisian cult gallery Air de Paris is presenting a large-scale outdoor work by Dorothy Iannone together with Peres Projects from Berlin, and Van Horn from Düsseldorf is participating in Hallen 05 with a specially conceived work by Anys Reimann. The Austrian artist duo Muntean/Rosenblum will be on show in a solo presentation, and the specially curated exhibition Fallow Ground , presented by the private collection Spaced Out (with RESERVOIR & PSM), features works by 22 artists from southern Africa.

Adam Budak, Director of the Kestner Gesellschaft, which is participating for the first time, said:

‘The Kestner Gesellschaft is delighted to participate in the Hallen05 festival and to contribute to the festival’s hybrid programme with the SPOONER2020 project by the agent provocateur of the art and entertainment world, Casey Spooner. Parallel to the current US presidential election campaign, Spooner’s quasi-political, larger-than-life extravaganza offers an alternative to the universe of fake leadership and abuse of power. Tragicomic at its core, it is a travesty of values and convictions, a desirable prophecy of a different, better world, a parodic proposal of extreme urgency and relevance, theatrically staged in the Wilhelm-Hallen, an industrial ruin in transition.’

The opening weekend of the festival includes a performance by Casey Spooner and the opportunity to take part in a voguing competition organised by the international House of Telfar & House of Juicy Couture. Halls 05 will host music and other events throughout the week. The summer festival organised by the community radio station Refuge Worldwide will conclude the event. About Hallen
Hallen 05 is the fifth edition of the autumn art event that has been taking place in the Wilhelm Hallen in Reinickendorf since 2020. It came about when a small group of Berlin gallery owners approached entrepreneur and art collector Philipp Solf and Omer Arbel (Bocci) in the summer of the same year, asking them to organise an exhibition in the Wilhelm Hallen. Within a month, they had organised the first edition of the now annual art event. The first and second editions consisted of a group of commercial galleries showing large-scale works of art in the largely unrenovated rooms of the Wilhelm Hallen. The third edition, subtitled Reinickendorf Rules, was expanded and welcomed 15 galleries and other partners in a more festival-like setting that celebrated contemporary art. Last year, the festival was expanded to include performances and non-Berlin-based galleries and participants.

About Wilhelm Hallen
The former Winkelhof iron foundry, now Wilhelm Hallen, consists of a listed ensemble of various halls, loft rooms and offices in beautiful red brick architecture with a total area of over 20,000 square metres. The factory halls, designed between 1898 and 1918 by the Pankow master bricklayer Christian Friedrich Malingriaux and built in 1902 by the architect Hermann Streubel, actually only underwent a few changes – in the 1950s, a few fixtures were added as well as the addition of a gatehouse. Since the closure of the foundry in 2014, the existing structure of the ensemble has remained untouched.
