Designed as a ‘mobile classroom’ in a converted double-decker bus, the Demokratiemobil will take Berlin school pupils and unaccompanied young refugees directly to the exhibitions of the Ethnological Museum of the National Museums in Berlin in the Humboldt Forum from Monday, 23 September 2024. There, the young people can learn about and experience democratic values in various workshops.

The Democracy Mobile is a project of the Mernissi-de Gouges educational and social organisation run by lawyer, author and women’s rights activist Seyran Ateş and is used in Berlin. The converted BVG double-decker bus is used for mobile democracy education and is used as an educational, art, cultural and meeting platform. The Democracy Mobile is primarily aimed at youth leisure facilities, schools, parents, vocational training centres, youth education centres, residential child and youth welfare facilities and specialist schools.
With the Ethnological Museum in the Humboldt Forum, the Democracy Mobile is now regularly travelling to a permanent location in a Berlin museum for the first time.
In the exhibitions of the Ethnological Museum in the Humboldt Forum, children and young people can attend various workshops on topics such as ‘What is home? How can Berlin become a new home?’, “Islam and diversity” and “Islam and democracy”. In creative processes, the young people can focus on their own topics and wishes, look for emotional connections to individual objects from the museum and think about a democratic and pluralistic future. A visit to the exhibition at the Ethnological Museum as a place of cultural diversity is intended to support the experience that democracy means freedom of opinion and religion and that it also decidedly allows contradictory opinions and wants to protect social diversity.
