EMOP Opening Days | 27.02.-02.03.2025

Editors’ Choice

This year’s edition of the EMOP Berlin photo festival begins with the EMOP Opening Days from February 27 to March 2, 2025 – a month dedicated entirely to photography. For three days, EMOP Berlin invites you to the festival center in the Akademie der Künste at the Hanseatenweg location for an extensive program that not only impresses with two central exhibitions, but also offers the opportunity to enter into an intensive exchange about the current discourses surrounding the medium of photography through various formats.

The EMOP Opening Days start with the official opening of the central festival exhibition was zwischen uns steht. Photography as a Medium of Chronicle, which will be shown together with the exhibition A Village 1950-2022: Ute Mahler, Werner Mahler and Ludwig Schirmer in the Festival Center. Admission is free of charge during the EMOP Opening Days.

Highlights during the EMOP Opening Days

Sound, image and live texts by Paul Hutchinson
As part of the opening ceremony on February 27 at the Akademie der Künste, Paul Hutchinson will present an exclusive live performance that combines moving images, sound and photography into a performative reading. The artist, known for his exploration of urban life, social injustice and inner-city culture, invites you on an audiovisual excursion that includes current and unpublished works and texts.

Discover new perspectives
The program during the EMOP Opening Days includes artist talks that offer insights into photographic practices as well as panel discussions that deepen the leitmotif of what stands between us. The focus will be on topics such as documentary photography as a political practice, remembering and forgetting through photographic images, experiences of flight, image politics and dealing with the climate crisis. In addition, a film evening with selected contributions will take place under the title Recollection of Time – Films and Talks.

Photos in Books
Photos in Books offers the opportunity to discover small and large publishers and their publications. In the Book Talks format, visitors will also gain valuable insights into the creation and significance of photo books.

Award ceremony of the Ellen Auerbach Scholarship
The scholarship is awarded every two years and is financed by the estate of the photographer Ellen Auerbach, which is administered by the Akademie der Künste. The Ellen Auerbach Scholarship for Photography 2024 goes to Ilit Azoulay. The artist works at the interface of photography, fine art and sound art. The award ceremony will take place on February 28, 2025 at the Akademie der Künste on Hanseatenweg.

EMOP Special Young Scene
Another highlight of the EMOP Opening Days is the opening of the joint exhibition Meet Me Halfway as part of the EMOP Special Young Scene. The group exhibition brings together six Berlin and Potsdam training institutions in the field of photography and presents the perspectives of 14 up-and-coming photographers.

The first festival weekend will be rounded off by numerous other exhibition openings and events organized by the festival partners throughout the city.
