As summer begins, the “In Conversation” series at the Hamburger Bahnhof enters its second half of the year. On 28 June, artist Stan Douglas will be in conversation with curator Eva Respini. In July, Andrea Fraser will speak about her institution-critical art, and in September, Carsten Nicolai will be the guest; his work will be on display in the Ryuichi Sakamoto exhibition, which will have just opened at the Hamburger Bahnhof. Sung Tieu and Kathleen Reinhardt, who are presenting the German Pavilion at the current Venice Biennale alongside Henrike Naumann, will continue the autumn season in October. Sophie Calle will follow in November to mark her first solo exhibition in Berlin in 20 years. Admission to the events is free.

In Conversation: Stan Douglas in conversation with Eva Respini
In his work, Stan Douglas explores the mechanisms of historiography. The videos in his media installations have no beginning or end, but consist of narrative elements that are constantly reassembled by a computer. In this way, Douglas breaks down linear structures and creates alternative interpretations of historical events, a process the artist refers to as ‘recombinable narrative’. Stan Douglas has participated in Documenta on several occasions. In 2022, he represented Canada at the Venice Biennale. Eva Respini has held curatorial positions at the Museum of Modern Art and the ICA/Boston and is currently Co-CEO and Curator at Large at the Vancouver Art Gallery. In 2022, she was curator and co-commissioner of Simone Leigh’s presentation in the US Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale. Works by Stan Douglas have been featured in several exhibitions at the Hamburger Bahnhof since 2001: “Beyond Cinema” (2007), “Magical Soup” (2020/21), “Scratching the Surface” (2021) and “Broken Music Vol. 2” (2022/23).
