Art Basel is an international art fair for modern and contemporary art. The Basel edition showcases works in painting, sculpture, installation, photography, video, and digital art. It presents around 290 galleries with more than 4,000 artists from over 40 countries. The fair is divided into thematic sections, including Galleries, Feature, Unlimited, Statements, Premiere, Parcours, Edition, Kabinett, and Messeplatz Project, to reflect different presentation formats and artistic approaches.
Special features:
The Unlimited section showcases large-scale installations and monumental works outside of traditional exhibition booths. The Premiere section focuses on works from the last five years by artists in the middle of their careers. As part of Parcours, artworks are presented in public spaces in Basel and integrated into the urban context.
Target audience:
The fair is aimed at an international professional audience, including collectors, gallery owners, curators, museum representatives, and visitors interested in art. Around 88,000 visitors from over 90 countries are expected to attend.
History:
Art Basel was founded in 1970 by Ernst Beyeler, Trudl Bruckner, and Balz Hilt. The first edition attracted more than 90 galleries and over 16,000 visitors. Since then, the fair has developed into the world’s leading platform for contemporary art and expanded with editions in Miami Beach (since 2002), Hong Kong (since 2013), and Paris (since 2022).
