From September 26th to 30th 2018, the seventh Berlin Art Week will present a programme that is unique in its diversity and density and will once again make the capital city a meeting place for the international art world.
Two art fairs, 15 museums and exhibition halls, two art associations, a theatre, 11 private Berlin collections and 20 project spaces offer an extensive program. In addition to exhibitions, performances and award ceremonies, Berlin Art Week features numerous special events and guided tours on contemporary art and its places in the German capital, inviting visitors to explore current themes and developments. In addition, the event week with art projects in public spaces will shape the Berlin cityscape for five days.

Fairs
The programme focuses on the two art fairs art berlin (Thu 4 – 8 pm, Fri + Sat 11 am – 7 pm, Sun 11 am – 5 pm) and Positions Berlin Art Fair (Thu 5 – 9 pm, Fri + Sat 1 – 8 pm, Sun 11 am – 6 pm), which will take place for the first time this year in the hangars of the former Tempelhof airport (Platz der Luftbrücke 5, 12101 Berlin-Tempelhof). art berlin – founded in 2017 as a cooperation between abc art berlin contemporary and Art Cologne – enters its second round and plays in Hangars 5 and 6. It presents around 120 galleries from over 20 countries. While in the “Galleries” section more than 90 galleries present highlights from their program, the “Special Projects” section is reserved for 28 individual presentations and curated projects. A new feature this year is the “Salon”, for which curator Tenzing Barshee brings together artists from several galleries. Positions Berlin Art Fair will move into Hangar 4 for its fifth edition. In addition to presentations by 74 international galleries from Lithuania, Latvia, Italy, Switzerland, the USA, Canada, China and Germany, there will be a curated special exhibition entitled “Selected Positions” showing works by young artists. In addition, the “Academy Positions” will show selected works by graduates of German art academies.
Galleries
The Gallery Openings of the Berlin galleries participating in the fairs alone comprise more than 70 exhibitions in the gallery spaces of the city. In addition, there are around 350 other exhibitions of Berlin galleries and project spaces that simultaneously present their artists (exhibitions at www.artatberlin.com).

… The Most Dangerous Game (27.09.-10.12.2018) at the House of World Cultures (HKW) on the history of the Situationist International, an exhibition that thematizes the break with art around 1962, when the S.I. distanced itself from those members who wanted to adhere to a primarily artistic practice. It followed the activities of the S.I. until the revolt in France in May 1968, in which the S.I. was significantly involved. The uprising was suffocated after a few weeks. The bourgeois society, however, appropriated the themes of the revolting youth and subsequently subjected all areas of life – including sexuality – to capitalist exploitation.
A 37 90 89 – Die Erfindung der NeoAvantgarde im Neuen Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) (Chausseestraße 128/129, 10115 Berlin-Mitte) is dedicated to the genesis of institution-critical practices in the art field since the 1960s, based on the project space A 37 90 89 founded in Antwerp in 1969. A 37 90 89 had a decisive influence on the development of project spaces worldwide.

New openings and reopenings (with a change of date!)
A great special feature is the first public opening after almost 30 years of the restored picture cellar of the Akademie der Künste on Pariser Platz with large wall paintings by Manfred Böttcher, Ernst Schroeder, Harald Metzkes and Horst Zickelbein.
A further new opening as part of Berlin Art Week is initiated by Deutsche Bank, which is opening its art, culture, and sports forum PalaisPopulaire in the historic building of the Prinzessinnenpalais (Unter den Linden 5, 10117 Berlin-Mitte) on September 27th with the exhibition The World on Paper.
Attention: Change of date! The reopening of the Haus am Waldsee with a solo exhibition of Karin Sander announced for September 27th was postponed to November 29th, 2018 due to the construction! On 30.09.2018 at 15 o’clock the Haus am Waldsee (Argentinische Allee 30, 14163 Berlin-Zehlendorf) will hold a charity auction in favour of the new building. The preview will take place on 30.09. at 10 am, the auction will be conducted by Prof. Dr. Dirk Boll, Christie’s.
EMOP
A special focus in 2018 will be on photographic art – including the EMOP Opening Days of the European Month of Photography Berlin, which mark the start of the Month of Photography in Berlin – with the photographic show Back to the Future at the C/O Berlin.
Urban Interventions
A novelty this year are the various interventions in public space with which Berlin Art Week literally takes to the streets: for example, the artist Mischa Kuball, with a walk-in light and sound installation, will play on the new exhibition space in the Jewish Museum Berlin (26.-30-09.2018), which will be transferred from the museum into public space at Oranienstraße 1 in Berlin-Kreuzberg in parallel. The internationally renowned program series Immersion of the Berliner Festspiele will play on Kreuzberg’s Mariannenplatz with a mobile dome as part of its new project The New lnfinity.
