Supported by the international media company Bertelsmann and the project company U5, the Berlin Plein Air painter Christopher Lehmpfuhl is showing 37 works from the Schlossplatz cycle of more than 100 paintings in the temporary “Underground Gallery” of the future intersection station “Unter den Linden. These show examples of the demolition of the Palast der Republik (“the New Center”) and the various phases of the reconstruction of the city palace.

Berlin’s Schlossplatz, the historical centre of Berlin, the landmark of this cosmopolitan city has been my major artistic theme since 2008. It is precisely these upheavals and rapid urban changes that I have captured in large-format (180 x 240 cm) enormously pasty oil paintings. Continuously and intensively. In the open air, always on location and almost simultaneously.

An interview with Christopher Lehmpfuhl and Dr. Stephanie Niehoff (Communication & Resident Management Officer) in the newsletter of the project company U5 gives a foretaste of the exhibition: Interview mit Christopher Lehmpfuhl und Dr. Stephanie Niehoff.

Christopher Lehmpfuhl, former master student of Klaus Fußmann at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin, has received numerous awards, including a scholarship from the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts and the GASAG Kunstpreis Berlin. To mark the 20th anniversary of German reunification in 2009, the artist was commissioned to paint the 16 federal states of the Federal Republic of Germany.
