In the course of the celebrations for the foundation of the Czechoslovak Republic 100 years ago, the Czech Centre Berlin is showing the design exhibition at a beautiful angle until February 21st, 2019. It is dedicated to modern product design in the Czech Republic and Slovakia and shows a line of tradition from the time of Cubism to the work of young designers in the present.

In the course of the celebrations for the foundation of the Czechoslovak Republic 100 years ago, the Czech Centre Berlin is showing the design exhibition at a beautiful angle until February 21st, 2019. It is dedicated to modern product design in the Czech Republic and Slovakia and shows a line of tradition from the time of Cubism to the work of young designers in the present.
The exhibited objects, including loans from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, show a fundamental understanding of design from geometry. The foundations for this seem to have already been laid in Prague’s scientific-philosophical teaching since the 16th century, and continue to be popular in general art education to the present day. Against this background, the elegance and dynamic appearance, functionality and constructive refinement of many everyday objects as well as graphic designs appear as unmistakable Czech/Slovak phenomena in design. In an international design scene that often demands interchangeable results, young designers from both countries can assert themselves with remarkable independence and uniqueness.
Accompanying the exhibition in January and February 2019, a discussion round and a workshop with design students in Prague will enable an exchange of ideas between designers/experts and the interested public from Prague and Berlin.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication.
The exhibition is complemented by a Modernista Pop Up Shop with the best design pieces from the last 100 years from the Czech Republic. In cooperation with the Museum of Applied Arts in Prague, Modernista has published several new “classic” editions: cubist ceramics by Pavel Janák, Rudolf Stockar and Vlastislav Hofman, furniture and home accessories designed by Josef Gočár or Jindřich Halabala, Ladilav Sutnar’s wooden toys and many other unique products. Modernista also collects and restores valuable original furniture, lamps and everyday objects. Modernista also offers other design products that have been tried and tested over the years.
