Highlights 2020 | Staatliche Museen zu Berlin

Editors’ Choice

At the end of October 2019, the National Museums in Berlin will publish an outlook on the highlights of the extensive special exhibition programme that await us in the coming year 2020. “2020 will once again be an exciting and diverse exhibition year for the National Museums in Berlin,” says General Director Michael Eissenhauer. “From Raffael to Katharina Grosse, from the Germanic tribes to Pop Art, from late Gothic to GDR design, the spectrum of next year’s special exhibition programme ranges. Our visitors can look forward to big names and new discoveries, to large-scale presentations and concentrated cabinet exhibitions, to well-known positions and surprising perspectives. Once again, the National Museums in Berlin impressively underscore their status as a universal museum, whose 15 collections can generate from their art and cultural treasures an almost infinite variety of themes from up to 400,000 years of human history that is unparalleled internationally. I would like to thank all my colleagues in our collections and institutions for their great commitment and thank our international and national partners and sponsors without whose support such a rich program would not be possible. Last but not least, I wish our visitors an inspiring, happy and healthy year 2020”.

Please note that additions and changes are still possible in the program.

Eine Sonderausstellung des Kupferstichkabinetts – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin

On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of Raphael’s death, the National Museums in Berlin are dedicating two special exhibitions to the most important artist of the Italian Renaissance. Parallel to the exhibition “Raffael in Berlin. The Madonnas of the Gemäldegalerie”, the Kupferstichkabinett shows the artist’s small but significant group of drawings from his own collection. These rarely shown works demonstrate Raphael’s outstanding creative range – complemented by works by his teacher Perugino and his most important students and collaborators Gianfrancesco Penni, Giulio Romano and Perino del Vaga as well as his copper engraver Marcantonio Raimondi.

Momentaufnahmen. Nubien um 1900

March 6th – August 30th 2020

Eine Sonderausstellung des Ägyptischen Museums und Papyrussammlung – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin

Nubia – a lost cultural landscape, the Orient and a scientific expedition around the turn of the century: In March and April 1900, the Egyptologists Georg Steindorff, Ludwig Borchardt and Heinrich Schäfer, together with the classical archaeologist Hermann Thiersch and the diplomat Curt von Grünau, undertook a journey into the area between the First and Second Nile Cataracts. One of the destinations was the pharaonic border fortresses of the Middle Kingdom. After the photographic documentation of this Nubian journey had long been considered lost, an unlabelled collection of around 300 photos was recovered in 2015 when the Egyptian Museum’s photo archive was inspected and processed. After intensive research, this unlabelled collection could be clearly assigned to the historical Nubian journey and will now be presented to the public for the first time as part of the exhibition.

March 13th – June 28th 2020

Eine Sonderausstellung der Kunstbibliothek – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin

Logo, signage system, corporate identity – what today is a natural part of every company’s image was still in its infancy in the middle of the 20th century. Stankowski + Duschek, a Stuttgart-based graphic design studio, was a pioneer in its development and for more than three decades was one of the leading communication design firms in Germany. Famous trademarks and appearances have emerged from the partnership since 1972, including for Deutsche Bank, Viessmann and Messe Frankfurt. The constructive aesthetics of the sign systems reveal the environment of concrete art in which Anton Stankowski (1906-1998) and Karl Duschek (1947-2011) moved simultaneously. In the exhibition, around 300 designs and printed matter from the Kunstbibliothek’s holdings enter into dialogue with works of art. For the first time, an overview of the extensive oeuvre of the Stankowski + Duschek.

Pop on Paper. Von Warhol bis Lichtenstein

April 3rd – July 26th 2020

Eine Sonderausstellung des Kupferstichkabinetts – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin

The Kupferstichkabinett possesses an outstanding collection of prints from the 1960s – with a special focus on Pop Art works. The various facets of Pop Art, especially American Pop Art, whose most important medium of worldwide distribution was screen printing, will be presented in the spotlight. This allowed the artists to translate the colorful consumer world with motifs from advertising, newspapers or comic strips into colorful, often striking images. Around 100 works by artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist, Tom Wesselmann, Allen Jones, Richard Hamilton and others bear witness to this, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Indiana, Sigmar Polke, R. B. Kitaj, Maria Lassnig and Ulrike Ottinger. Selected loans from the poster and design sector complement the presentation.

April 4th – July 19th 2020

Eine Sonderausstellung der Kunstbibliothek – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin und des Museums für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg

Around 1980, photography gained a new status in the art world. New photographic approaches were tried out, museums began to take an interest in the medium, and the first photo galleries were founded. The starting point for the exhibition on this exciting period of upheaval is the magazine “Fotografie. Zeitschrift internationaler Fotokunst”, which appeared between 1977 and 1985 and was edited by Wolfgang Schulz. Schulz tried to evade fixed norms and pursued different styles and subjects both as an editor of the magazine and as a photographer.

Katharina Grosse. It wasn’t us

April 24th – October 4th 2020

Eine Sonderausstellung der Nationalgalerie – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin

Katharina Grosse (*1961, Freiburg i. Br.) occupies a central position in contemporary art with her spectacular site-specific paintings, which she creates with a spray gun and strong-colored acrylic paints. Her expansive works can be experienced as pulsating, three-dimensional pictorial worlds that include walls, ceilings, and floors and can also occupy objects in space. In this painting, everything becomes the image carrier and is captured by a vibrating energy of color that disturbs our usual image of reality and opens up spaces of possibility that have not yet been conceived. Large walk-in images emerge in interior and exterior spaces and reflect the way we deal with institutional and urban spaces. In spring 2020, the artist will use the historical hall of the Hamburger Bahnhof as well as parts of the outdoor area for a new painting with sculptural elements, which will reflect the existing order of the museum space. will be radically destabilized and renegotiated.

Museumsinsel Berlin, Alte Nationalgalerie
Todessehnsucht und Dekadenz. Der belgische Symbolismus

May 15th – September 13th 2020

Eine Sonderausstellung der Nationalgalerie – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin in Kooperation mit den Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique

The lustful look into the abyss, the exaggerated aestheticism of a supersaturated society that at the same time believed itself to be in crisis, the morbid appeal between Thanatos and Eros – these are themes in art that found their expression at the end of the 19th century, especially in Belgian symbolism. Against the development of the surface stimulus of naturalism and impressionism, a new art movement emerged in the 1880s, characterised by sensuality, profound significance and irrationality. The specificity of Belgian symbolism is a preference for morbid and decadent motifs. The large-scale special exhibition presents the spectrum of previously little-known Belgian positions such as Fernand Khnopff, Léon Spilliaert, Félicien Rops, James Ensor and Jean Delville. Works by Gustave Moreau, Max Klinger, Arnold Böcklin, Edvard Munch and Gustav Klimt form the reference for Belgium as a hub of European symbolism.

Eine Sonderausstellung der Skulpturensammlung und Museum für Byzantinische Kunst, des Münzkabinetts und des Zentralarchivs – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin

How does a collection become a museum? The façade of the Bode Museum is one of Berlin’s iconic images, but although the exterior of the museum is very familiar to both Berliners and tourists, its content and history are unknown to many. Sculptures, Byzantine art, paintings and coins from around 2,000 years of human history can be discovered here, but the peculiarities and backgrounds of the collections often remain hidden. As part of the special exhibition spanning the entire building, the Bode Museum critically questions how it became what it is today. Its exciting history of collections and architecture, which is closely linked to the history of Berlin, is also integrated. as well as its employees and visitors.

Michael Schmidt (1945-2014) occupies a unique position in contemporary German photography. Born in Berlin, he found his way to photography as an artistic means of expression as an autodidact in the mid-1960s. For each of his work groups, Schmidt developed an individual photographic method of accessing reality. The retrospective at Hamburger Bahnhof is the first chronological presentation of Schmidt’s entire life’s work and the first overview exhibition of the Berlin photographer in his hometown after 25 years. In addition to the work groups “Waffenruhe” (1987), “Einheit” (1996), “Lebensmittel” (2012) and other original photographs, unpublished working prints, book designs and archive materials present the development of the artistic work, which for a younger generation of photographers has been the subject of constant research and development. Weizenegger says: “As a designer, I design spaces for action. He creates awareness of the existing production conditions, perhaps even responsibility. This is how design creates cultural and social added value”.

In the winter of 1954-55, Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) implemented a long-cherished wish: The 73-year-old painted a response to the famous portrayal of Eugène Delacroix’s “The Women of Algiers”, which was created in two versions in memory of a trip to North Africa in 1832. After completion of the restoration, the painting will be made accessible to the public again in a focused exhibition. October 9th 2020 – February 14th 2021

Eine Sonderausstellung der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin

As the first comprehensive exhibition in German-speaking countries, the special exhibition in the Gemäldegalerie is dedicated to Late Gothic art. Inspired by Dutch developments, the means of artistic expression changed from the 1430s onwards: light and shadow, body and space were increasingly portrayed realistically; with the invention of printing technology, these innovations found mass distribution. Despite their religious purpose, pictures were increasingly perceived as art. With some 120 objects – including outstanding loans and central works from the holdings of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin – the media innovations of the 15th century become comprehensible in the juxtaposition of different art genres. Diverse contexts testify to a permanent interplay between the media, which is the art of the Let late Gothic be experienced in its entirety.

Eine Sonderausstellung des Museums für Islamische Kunst – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin

Historical collections, such as those of the Museum of Islamic Art, are important to us today because they show our cultural heritage. This is clearly visible when contemporary works face historical objects. Today’s art always resorts to the previous, sometimes more visible, sometimes less obvious. Through small interventions with contemporary art, this legacy is made clear in its current artistic treatment. Thus, to this day, the art of writing releases creative energies, as in Mounir al-Shaarani’s paintings, who creates calligraphies that seem historic but are completely contemporary.

In addition, the ideologically contested market in divided Berlin was heated up by residential exhibitions. Based on this context, the exhibition examines the socio-political dimension of living and the role of design between utopia, power and gender discourses during the Cold War. She focuses on the countries of the former Eastern Bloc and their housing and consumption models. It is created in collaboration with a international research and design team set up specifically for the project.
