It is often argued that a specific selection of artistic positions must follow an already validated discourse as an anchor of meaning, in much the same way that cities and municipalities commonly select their honorary grave beneficiaries. The selection process, as carried out by the editors Mark Gisbourne and Christoph Tannert for the book and exhibition, was consistently oriented towards the cut-off date of 1972 and was otherwise interested in those voices that are not yet known to the general public and, in one or two cases, still too little known even to the specialist public.

The editors of DISSONANCE. Platform Germany dare to judge, uncover the unexpected and look for the added value in aesthetically stirring achievements of programmatic plurality, some of which are still searching for their painting-relevant added meaning. If the publication and exhibition were to be read as a scene of action and an uncovered bill of exchange for the future, their claim would have been fulfilled.
