Bettina Pousttchi at Skulpturenpark Waldfrieden in Wuppertal | 03.09.-06.11.2022

Editors’ Choice

Bettina Pousttchi has become internationally known for her black and white photo installations, which often cover entire building facades and refer to the urban or historical context of a place. The photo installation conceived for Waldfrieden, Fluidity House, covers the entire window surfaces of the building in the lower exhibition hall with a net-like white pattern.

The form is based on photos the artist took of timber-frame house facades, then reworked into patterns of her own design. She calls this a “transnational pattern,” as it fluidly combines the architectural language of two different cultural regions, those of Europe and the Middle East.

The intervention transforms the building into a sculpture, creating an oscillating tension between transparency and opacity that will change along with shifting light conditions and landscapes during the course of the exhibition.

Bettina Pousttchi (born 1971, lives and works in Berlin) has completed a number of works of this kind, among them, for the main facade of the Konzerthaus Berlin in 2021, the Berlinische Galerie in 2019, or the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, Texas, in 2014. Currently, her walk-in sculpture The Curve is installed on the rooftop terrace of the Bundeskunsthalle Bonn and can be visited until October 29, 2023..

ONE WINDOW — THREE ARTISTS

The window, the membrane between inside and outside, becomes sculpture: from March to November 2022, the Waldfrieden Sculpture Park is presenting a series of three consecutive exhibitions in which, for the first time, the architecture of an exhibition hall will become the artistic point of departure.

Daniel Buren, Tatsuo Miyajima and Bettina Pousttchi realized a new work for the glass façade of the exhibition hall in the lower park area for three months at a time.

The three artists from three generations each stand for an independent artistic oeuvre that has been internationally recognised for many years. In the Waldfrieden Sculpture Park, they are brought together for the first time in the context of this exhibition series.
