Cameron Clayborn has been awarded the Baloise Art Prize in September 2021. As in the past three editions with Sam Pulitzer, Lawrence Abu Hamdan and Xinyi Cheng, this award is linked to a purchase by the Baloise Group for the collection of the National Gallery, an exhibition at the Hamburger Bahnhof and a publication. clayborn’s first solo exhibition in Europe, entitled “nothing left to be”, shows, among other things, the two sculptures from the series “homegrown” (2021), which come to the National Gallery as a donation.

Cameron Clayborn (* 1992, grew up in Memphis, TN, US, lives and works in New Haven, CT, US) works with materials such as paper, plaster ceiling paint, insulation material and recycled clothing. clayborn’s artistic practice includes drawing and performance in addition to sculpture. The sculptures “homegrown #1” and “homegrown #2”, which taper sharply towards the bottom, appear to stand on the floor but hang like cocoons from the ceiling of the exhibition space. While the uncertain-looking position demands distance, the texture and surface draws viewers in to take a closer look at the works. This interplay of distance and proximity, solidity and fragility, physicality and abstraction characterises clayborn’s sculptural works.
The exhibition is curated by Sven Beckstette.
The exhibition takes place within the framework of the Berlin Art Week.
The exhibition is made possible by the Baloise Group.
