From 1 to 5 February 2023, transmediale presents the 36th festival edition at the Akademie der Künste, Hanseatenweg.

Over four days and again with an audience, transmediale returns to its unique festival mode: under the title a model, a map, a fiction, the Akademie der Künste will transform into a space for discussions, workshops, exhibitions, performances and films. For the first time, the main festival days will be complemented by the city-wide exhibition format Out of Scale. Through a combination of theoretical discourse, diverse conversation formats and artistic interventions, the festival addresses the question of how the scalability of technology creates relationships and ruptures in the world, thus circulating images en masse and detached from their historical and political contexts. transmediale 2023 invites collective reflection and discussion on notions of scale and computational logics, their efficacy and instrumentalisation.
a model, a map, a fiction
We are flooded by images and the multiple realities they create. Models, maps and fictions about the world are calculated and transferred to our mobile screens. Their respective meanings are constantly scaled and distributed via data servers, network cables, data centres, 3D assets and automated algorithms. These algorithms and their programmed bias effects have made the world quantifiable while organising our personal preferences and political views or even reducing us to tokenised transactions.
At least that is how it seems. Discrete surveillance systems, work done in secret, infrastructures and networks of automated images determine the technological conditions of our perception and affect the material structure of the world. The extent to which social relations, political relationships and our emotional world are out of balance can be seen in the flawed representations on our screens. These fragile realities are in danger of eroding even further and ultimately collapsing. With this risk comes the question of what role scaling technologies can play in changing what is mapped, measured and classified
transmediale 2023 negotiates the impact of the post-digital age on our lives and how the scalability of technology determines the conditions for our relationships and feelings, for democratic processes and infrastructures.
Citywide Festival Programme
For the first time and parallel to the four-day festival at the Akademie der Künste, transmediale presents a city-wide programme funded by the Berlin Senate: Out of Scale. A free exhibition distributed across the city, Out of Scale unfolds in urban networks and infrastructures, including ebay classifieds, the underground ad system or the city’s green spaces, inviting critical exchanges on how technology and its associated measurement methods and evaluation systems can be reconfigured. The exhibition challenges ubiquitous top-down perspectives on the city through smartphones and platforms and explores urban space from non-human, human and algorithmic perspectives.
Once again, transmediale and CTM are kicking off the festival season together: under the title Portals, our long-standing partner CTM – Festival for Adventurous Music and Art opens its festival on 27 January, giving our audience the opportunity to complement the festival experience with a wide-ranging programme around sound art and music. Vorspiel is a programme of events that brings together project spaces and artists from the fields of digital art and experimental sound and traditionally kicks off transmediale festival and CTM. The more than ten-year-old cooperation project between transmediale and CTM will take place from 20 January in various venues – from silent green to the Panke, designtransfer and liebig12, as well as many more.
transmediale–festival for art and digital culture
For more than thirty years, transmediale has stood for critical engagement with and reflection on cultural, social and political transformations from a post-digital perspective. The annual festival with changing thematic focuses in the context of art and digital culture forms the starting point of transmediale’s activities. The festival takes place in various venues in Berlin, including the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, the Akademie der Künste and the Kunstquartier Bethanien. Since 2021, and for the first time in the festival’s history, transmediale has its own exhibition and event space, the transmediale studio, in the silent green Kulturquartier.
