As part of Berlin Fashion Week, the Kunstbibliothek at Kulturforum in Berlin is showing an immersive mixed reality presentation by Esther Perbandt, one of the most innovative contemporary Berlin fashion designers. At the Berlin art fair POSITIONS Berlin Art Fair in September 2021, visitors* were able to project designs from this collection onto their own bodies via AR (Augmented Reality). In the “Astro Noir Lab” these virtual designs are now becoming real. The special presentation will take place on the evening of January 17, 2023 in the foyer and exhibition hall of the Berlin Kulturforum. Admission is free.

Against the backdrop of the question of how she will work 100% sustainably in ten years’ time, Esther Perbandt presents her elaborately made clothes with integrated chips via which value chains and the origin of materials are digitally visualised. These are implementations of digital fashion designs that Esther Perbandt first showed in July 2021 during her digital fashion show “Astro Noir” in a livestream. She is thus the first German fashion designer of a pure 3D collection that was also presented at a 3D fashion show.
At the Berlin art fair “Positions” in September 2021, visitors were able to project designs from this collection onto their own bodies via AR (augmented reality). In the “Astro Noir Lab” at the Kulturforum, these virtual designs now become real and their respective clothing stories can be explored digitally.
The Art Library preserves precisely such dress stories in its Modebild-Lipperheide Costume Library collection. The holdings include photographs, drawings, prints, paintings and textual sources such as fashion magazines, with the oldest works dating from the late Middle Ages. The collection is continuously being expanded and continued into the contemporary. On the occasion of her presentation together with the Art Library, Esther Perbandt is donating four prints of her “Astro Noir” designs to the Modebild Collection. Two of them will be on display that evening alongside a selection of drawings and photographs from the collection that historically contextualise Esther Perbandt’s work.
