The objects we keep tell our story. Whether it’s camping gear, a grandparent’s dresser, laundry or birthday cards, our leftovers shed light on our values, hopes and uncertainties.

Dana Melaver’s “The Leftovers” explores this idea. This work is created entirely from a flat that was converted into a storage space in March 2020. For three years, Brooklyn’s No. 2070 flat housed early art projects, forks and toothpaste: a neighbourhood of practical and sentimental relics. In The Leftovers, Melaver uses this tucked-away archive as raw material for new works, transforming a mattress into a canvas, waste paper into a projection screen, and an umbrella stand into a musical instrument. By allowing these objects to change, Melaver gives new life to the things left behind.
Melaver’s work, which was first exhibited this year at Kunstraum LLC in New York City, undergoes another transformation in Berlin to come of age a second time. After its journey across the Atlantic, “The Leftovers” lands at Culterim Backshop in Gesundbrunnen. In its second life, the exhibition illuminates our attachment to material and immaterial objects of the past as we grow into our new lives elsewhere. In a city full of newcomers, Melaver talks about the shared experience of moving, rebuilding and repurposing a life – and the baggage that comes with it.
