At the centre of the evening are six international thoroughbred musicians and artists who combine their passion for music with exceptional talent. With virtuoso piano sounds, powerful saxophone melodies, pulsating bass lines and soulful vocals, they create an intoxicating atmosphere that is sure to captivate the audience. The special: After the opener, there will be a jam to which all musicians are cordially invited.
The musical passion of Daryl Taylor was shaped at a young age by blues, jazz and R&B. His family owned a night café outside Houston, Texas, which introduced him to blues, jazz and the R&B styles of the time. His first performances were singing and playing the tambourine in church. At an early age he played drums and banjo. At 15, he started playing bass guitar, infected by the bass grooves of James Jamerson (Motown) and Bernard Odum (James Brown). At 20, he played jazz standards on the double bass. Later, Taylor toured extensively with Archie Bell & the Drells (Philly International Records). Numerous jazz performances followed with Arnett Cobb, Kenny Burrell, Sonny Stitt and many more. “Big Jay” McNeely’s Sax-O-Mania II took Taylor on a tour of Germany in 1989, where he played at the Quasimodo Berlin and witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall. Currently, Taylor continues to compose, perform and record music while involved in various touring and recording projects.
The rhythmic vibes are created by Yatziv Caspi on drums. He is one of the most sought-after drummers in the local jazz scene and has mastered not only the drums but also various percussion instruments and the Indian tabla. His versatile skills are reflected in his collaborations with artists from different genres.
The expressive voice of Tamir Cohen will reliably captivate the audience. The Israeli-German musician and singer is known for his collaborations with various bands, including the nine-piece soul-funk band “Celebration”, “The Wright Thing” from Heidelberg and Herbert Grönemeyer’s band. He even toured as a background singer with Laith Al-Deen and appeared in TV shows. Later he found his musical home with the band Syndicate and toured the whole world.
On saxophone, the audience can expect Omri Abramov, an Israeli saxophone and EWI player, composer and producer. He has already collaborated with renowned artists such as Noa, Dennis Chambers, Kurt Rosenwinkel and others on stage and in the studio. Abramov is also active as the musical producer of the Iranian-Israeli group “Sistanagila” and as co-leader of the jazz fusion band “Niogi”.
The host and co-initiator of the evening is Avi Albers Ben Chamo, an Israeli artist based in Berlin. He is not only a painter, but also a musician and composer of Jewish choral music. As founder of the Jazzy Berlin Community and member of the cultural project “Sistanagila”, he brings a creative and mystical touch to the CSR Jazz Nights. Many jazz fans know him from jazz concerts at Kater Holzig, Neue Heimat and Klunkerkranich.
CSR JAZZ NIGHTS are organised and implemented through a collaboration between Jazzy Berlin, the capital’s jazz community portal, and ARTatBerlin.com, the art exhibition portal for exhibitions in Berlin galleries.
