Berlin Art Week 2023: Digital Art Lab – Meeting place for digital art at Berlin Art Week | 13.09.-17.09.2023

As part of the Berlin Art Week 2023, there will be a meeting place for digital art for the first time with the DIGITAL ART LAB from September 13 – 17, 2023. Accompanying the exhibition “UNLEASHED UTOPIAS. Artistic Speculations on Present and Future in the Metaverse” (September 9 – November 5, 2023) of the VR KUNSTPREIS 2023 of the DKB in cooperation with the CAA Berlin, curious art enthusiasts will meet for five days at the Haus am Lützowplatz (HaL) for a program with festival character.

DIGITAL ART LAB: HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE PROGRAMME

The DIGITAL ART LAB will celebrate its opening on Wednesday, 13 September 2023 at 6 pm with Alistair Hudson, Scientific and Artistic Director of the ZKM Karlsruhe. Hudson will highlight the significance and future development of new technologies for art and society. Further welcoming addresses will be given by Katharina Schilling, artistic director (interim) of the HaL, and Peggy Schoenegge, curator of the DIGITAL ART LAB.

The award ceremony of the VR KUNSTPREIS of the DKB in cooperation with CAA Berlin will take place on Friday, 15 September 2023 at 6 pm. This year’s prize jury consists of Yolanda Kaddu- Mulindwa, director of the municipal galleries Neukölln, Nora O Murchú, artistic director of transmediale, PD Dr. Ursula Ströbele, director of the Study Centre for Modern and Contemporary Art, Central Institute for Art History in Munich, Jan Walther, member of the board, Deutsche Kreditbank AG, Berlin and Dr. Marc Wellmann, artistic director at the Haus am Lützowplatz.

Experts from the institutional art world will discuss the potential of VR art in a panel on Thursday, 14 September at 4 p.m. and show to what extent it is a new art genre all its own. Participants include Emma Enderby, chief curator of the Haus der Kunst in Munich, Lívia Nolasco-Rózsás, curator at the ZKM Karlsruhe and Laura Hirvi, Academic Partnerships Manager at Meta.

In addition, there will be various talks on currently relevant topics of our (post-) digitalised time, where Boris Eldagsen, AI artist, Wenzel Mehnert, futurologist at the Austrian Institute of Technology, and Anne Schwanz from Office Impart, among others, will contribute their expertise.

During the CODING ART LABs, experienced VR experts will give digital-savvy artists and interested people at different levels of experience insights into the various programmes and have the opportunity to create an application themselves.

EXHIBITION: UNLEASHED UTOPIAS

The exhibition “UNLEASHED UTOPIAS. Artistic Speculations on the Present and Future in the Metaverse” will be on view at HaL from 9 September – 5 November 2023. The five artists nominated for the VR KUNSTPREIS – Marlene Bart, Anan Fries, Mohsen Hazrati, Rebecca Merlic and Lauren Moffatt – deal in their VR works with diverse and open forms of society, alternative uses of AI and visions for a better future!
