Editors’ Choice

The Neue Nationalgalerie is the festival venue for this year’s Berlin Art Week (BAW) from 13 – 17 September 2023 and is hosting a performance festival for the second time on the occasion of BAW 2023: PERFORM! with works by Yoko Ono, Göksu Kunak and many more; admission is free.

This year, the Neue Nationalgalerie is the venue for the festival meeting point BAW Garten, for which a temporary artistic installation made of trees has been created on the terrace in collaboration with atelier le balto. After the Berlin Art Week, the trees will be integrated into the project “Baumschule Kulturforum”. An extensive programme of events will take place in the BAW Garden. In addition, tours with Klaus Biesenbach lead into the construction pit of the Berlin Modern.

For Berlin Art Week from 13 to 17 September 2023, the Neue Nationalgalerie will host a second annual performance festival: PERFORM! will show historical positions from Yoko Ono’s “Cut Piece” (1964) to contemporary performances by Göksu Kunak, among others. In addition, the concert series Sound in the Garden will continue on 14 September with Casey Spooner. Last year, Simone Forti’s “Huddle” (1961), an important historical performance, was the focus of the Neue Nationalgalerie’s programme for Berlin Art Week 2022, and further performances by Franziska Aigner, Billy Bultheel, Miles Greenberg, Julian Jesus, and Maria Scaroni, among others, took place.

Programme

Participation in all events is free of charge. Participation without registration unless otherwise stated.

Tuesday 12 to Sunday 17.09.2023, 5pm
PERFORM!: Yoko Ono’s historic 1964 performance “Cut Piece” is one of her earliest performance works: here the artist sat alone, in her best clothes, on the floor with a pair of scissors in front of her. The audience was instructed to take turns approaching her and using the scissors to cut off a small piece of her clothing, which they were then allowed to keep. For Berlin Art Week, the Neue Nationalgalerie is cooperating with Studio Yoko Ono and Berlin-based performers will perform the work at the front of the upper hall.

Tuesday 12 to Sunday 17.09.2023, 4 p.m.
Berlin Modern: Together with artists and cultural actors, Klaus Biesenbach will lead daily tours through the construction pit of the Berlin Modern, the new museum building at the Kulturforum. Participation will be raffled via the Instagram channels of the Neue Nationalgalerie and Berlin Art Week.

Wednesday, 13.09, 17-22 hrs.
Reference Festival: For its 7th edition “Transition”, the Reference Festival partners with the Neue Nationalgalerie to present an interdisciplinary programme in the sculpture garden, on the terrace and in the museum shop. The programme is inspired by skateboarding and the idea of repurposing architecture to create a safe space. The Neue Nationalgalerie is a main hub for both art and skateboarding – in bridging communities, the festival puts a special focus on LGBTQIA+ individuals in music, art, fashion as well as the sport that inspires creative thinking like no other while connecting subcultures.

PERFORM!: Göksu Kunak presents her new production “VENUS”, commissioned for PERFORM! on the terrace of the Neue Nationalgalerie. “VENUS” is a site-specific, symbolically overloaded HyperAssemblage, a performative installation about clichés – especially about immigration, movement, being stuck, restriction, speed or slowing down. The work uses references from films, music videos as well as Fluxus, happenings and historical representations of Venus.

Saturday 16.09, 4pm-2pm.
PERFORM! The PERFORM! festival closes with a performance afternoon, the programme will be announced during Berlin Art Week.
