On 3 October, the curtain will rise on the 2023/24 season opening premiere of Verdi’s AIDA at Staatsoper Unter den Linden. The new production will be staged by Calixto Bieito, with Nicola Luisotti as musical director. The proven Verdi expert will perform for the first time with the Staatskapelle Berlin and the Staatsoper Chorus.

In his production, Bieito focuses on the chamber-play-like moments in AIDA as well as the tension between the political events of the time the play was written and our present day. Marina Rebeka will make her role debut in the title role of Aida. The rest of the ensemble includes Elīna Garanča (Amneris), Yusif Eyvazov (Radamès), René Pape (Ramphis), Gabriele Viviani (Amonasro), Grigory Shkarupa (King), Victoria Randem (Priestess), Gonzalo Quinchahual (Messenger), the Staatskapelle Berlin and the Staatsoper Chorus under the baton of the new choral director Dani Juris.
Rebecca Ringst is responsible for the stage design, Ingo Krügler for the costumes, Michael Bauer for the lighting and Adrià Reixach for the video design.
In his production, Calixto Bieito creates an arc from the time of the opera’s creation at the height of European imperialism to our present day. In doing so, he generates both impressive choral images and haunting chamber-play-like moments.
The Italian conductor Nicola Luisotti is currently headmaster guest conductor at the Teatro Real in Madrid after his post as general music director at the San Fransico Opera. Guest engagements have recently taken him to houses such as the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden London, the Teatro alla Scala di Milano or to orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
Calixto Bieito presents Verdi’s AIDA, his second work at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. He made his house debut with Wagner’s LOHENGRIN, this production was staged as a television premiere in December 2020 and had its public premiere in November 2021.
Since her international breakthrough at the Salzburg Festival under Riccardo Muti, soprano Marina Rebeka has been a regular guest at opera houses and concert halls such as the Metropolitan Opera New York, the Teatro alla Scala di Milano or the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. In the 2017/18 season, she was appointed the first “Artist in Residence” by the Münchner Rundfunkorchester, and in 2020 she received the International Classical Music Award (ICMA).
