Hannah Höch Preis 2024: Akinbode Akinbiyi. Being, Seeing, Wandering – Berlinische Galerie | 08.06.–14.10.2024

Editors’ Choice

Akinbode Akinbiyi (* 1946 Oxford, Great Britain) has been awarded the Hannah Höch Preis 2024. Akinbiyi, who has lived and worked in Berlin since 1991, explores the world’s metropolises for his street photography. Lagos, Bamako, Berlin or Durban – the urban space is his workplace. A place that he perceives as a ‘boundless labyrinth’, ‘a maze of never-ending streets, flowing together in countless paths’, as he put it in 2009. Akinbiyi photographs what he observes, analogue and predominantly in black and white. In front of the lens of his medium format camera, reality is staged playfully, almost autonomously. His images are visual metaphors that thematise cultural change and social exclusion as well as the socio-political and urban planning consequences of colonialism.

With around 120 photographs from various long-term series, the solo exhibition provides an insight into the extensive work of the internationally renowned photographer and author.

The Hannah Höch Prize has been awarded by the Cultural Administration of the Berlin Senate since 1996 for an outstanding artistic life’s work. It honours artists who live and work in Berlin and who stand out for their continuous artistic achievements. The prize is endowed with 25,000 euros and includes an exhibition and a publication. The selection is made by the Visual Arts Promotion Commission of the Berlin Senate’s Cultural Administration, in which the Berlinische Galerie, the Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin, the Kupferstichkabinett of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein are represented.

Özlem Altın receives the Hannah Höch Award 2024 for photography as an artistic medium.
