Ifa-Galerien Berlin presents from Friday 7 June 2024 the exhibition Measures Lullabies and Whispers. For the exhibition at ifa-Galerie Berlin, Joël Andrianomearisoa retraces his memories and draws inspiration from the lullaby his grandmother used to sing to him at bedtime. This childhood memory, in which some words are buried, creates spaces and interstices to invent new texts.

MEASURES LULLABIES AND WHISPERS is an invitation to explore the rhythm of lullabies and the power of memory. The soothing melodies, passed down from one generation to the next, are a reminder of the deep-rooted connection and sense of belonging. The words may be forgotten, but the body remembers the rhythm and the vibrations. The essence of lullabies, from the feelings of intimacy and belonging they evoke to their healing power, is Andrianomearisoa’s starting point for this poetic exploration, for the site-specific installation.
Joël Andrianomearisoa was born in 1977 in Antananarivo, Madagascar, and lives and works between Paris, Antananarivo and Magnat-l’Étrange. In 2019, Andrianomearisoa represented Madagascar for the first time at the 58th Biennale di Venezia with his work I HAVE FORGOTTEN THE NIGHT. His works have been exhibited internationally, including at MACAAL, Marrakech (2022), Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2021), MAXXI, Rome (2018), Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin (2010), Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, Washington DC (2015) and Centre Pompidou, Paris (2005).
The exhibition is curated by Meriem Berrada and Alya Sebti and features a newly commissioned film entitled PLEASE SING ME MY SONG BEFORE YOU GO, which will be premiered at the opening on 6 June with a site-specific installation.
