ELEVEN DAYS KITCHEN FESTIVAL – ifa-Galerie Stuttgart | 01.07.-11.07.2024

Editors’ Choice

For eleven days in July, the ifa Gallery in Stuttgart will be hosting an extraordinary programme: Spacedumpling. The gallery will be transformed into a lively meeting place with a mobile kitchen where the focus will be on cooking, eating, sharing recipes and telling stories. The collective cooking evenings are organised together with individuals, initiatives, groups and artists who are invited to share their recipes and the stories behind them and to prepare the proposed dishes together with the other guests.

When people leave their homes for a variety of reasons, cooking becomes an important medium to evoke memories and feelings of home. Preparing a meal and sharing it with others evokes certain moments and memories and offers the possibility of adapting to a new place and creating different visions of a shared future. Spacedumpling explores these questions: How do you cook away from home? How can cooking in a foreign city create a home? How do recipes change in a new environment? What memories, knowledge and feelings of home do recipes carry with them? How do diasporic and migratory realities of people, their dishes and their ingredients take shape?

Spacedumpling is the first chapter of Agua Quemada (Burnt Water), a programme of the ifa-Galerie Stuttgart that will provide the conceptual framework for the exhibitions and events for one year, addressing themes such as diasporic movements, memory, resilience, regeneration and community, as well as anestral technologies and forms of knowledge.

Initiators
The Spacedumpling programme was initiated in conversation with the Filipino artist and curator Merv Espina, whose practice and research is interested in the movement of ideas and courts through which counter-histories can be written and archives re-read. The concept for Spacedumpling was developed by Merv Espina, Bettina Korintenberg, Gabriel Rossell Santillán and Siri Thiermann.
