Avramidis, whose often larger-than-life bronze sculptures are always based on a figurative element, always strove for the reduced and absolute form. He drew his inspiration from both classical Greek sculpture and modernist influences.

Born the son of Pontic Greeks in Batumi (USSR) in 1922, persecution and the death of his father in prison forced the family to emigrate to Greece in 1939, from where he was deported to Austria as a forced laborer in 1943.

Avramidis studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he would later influence generations of artists as a professor. He represented Austria at the Venice Biennale in 1962, took part in documenta 3 (1964) and documenta 6 (1977) and was awarded the Grand Austrian State Prize for Art in 1973. He died in Vienna in 2016
