Staatsballett Berlin ends season with best capacity utilization since its foundation

The Staatsallett Berlin concludes the current season – the first under the direction of Christian Spuck – with an overall capacity of 98,2 % and thus the highest capacity since the founding of the company. 64 out of 84 performances were sold out. Among the most successful productions are 2 Chapters Love, Giselle, and William Forsythe, all of which were sold out for every performance.

The Staatsballett Berlin concludes the 2023/24 season after 84 performances with a total of 108,957 visitors. Over 75% of all performances, namely a total of 64 evenings, were sold out at 100%. After the previous season already had the most successful capacity since the founding of the company with 92.7%, this was surpassed with the current overall capacity of 98,2 %. The most successful productions were 2 Chapters Love, Giselle, and William Forsythe, all of which were sold out for every performance. Also, Bovary, the debut creation by Christian Spuck as the new artistic director, was one of the most successful productions with a capacity of 96%. Thus, the company was able to convince the audience across the entire range of its repertoire, from classical to contemporary.

 As part of Tanz ist KLASSE!, the education program of the Staatsballett, 4,475 children, adolescents, and adults participated in 191 workshops at the Staatsallett. Another approximately 600 children participated in multi-part formats at 14 cooperation schools and kindergartens as well as in 14 children’s dance and ballet courses. For the first time, a choreography and composition workshop was realized in collaboration with the Jungen Staatsoper, and around 350 children performed in May at the Tischlerei of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. 

Artistic Director Christian Spuck thanks for the successful first year: “I am delighted that the program and the company have been so well received and have evidently arrived in the city. 98,2 % is an abstract number. What is much more important to me is to personally feel the enthusiasm of the audience at every performance. Thank you for that!”

About four premieres in the 2023/24 season
The company celebrated four premieres in the 2023/24 season: Bovary by Christian Spuck, William Forsythe with three works by the American, 2 Chapters Love with creations by Sol León and Sharon Eyal, as well as Overture with choreographies by Marcos Morau and Crystal Pite offered the audience a wide range of choreographic styles. Furthermore, at Next Generation in the Tischlerei of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, choreographies from the ensemble were to be experienced, and the Gala – 20 Years Staatsballett Berlin celebrated the company’s birthday.  

About the 2024/25 season
The 2024/25 season will commence on September 7, 2024 with Bovary by Christian Spuck at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. The evening Minus 16 (October 25, 2024, Deutsche Oper Berlin) combines works by Sharon Eyal and Ohad Naharin, two strong voices of the present. Choreographer Edward Clug will create A Midsummer Night’s Dream after William Shakespeare (February 21, 2025, Deutsche Oper Berlin) as a full-length creation set to commissioned music by Milko Lazar. The ballet Winterreise to the eponymous song cycle by Franz Schubert in the musical arrangement by Hans Zender (May 11, 2025, Staatsoper Unter den Linden) will be newly developed by Christian Spuck with the ensemble. In the last premiere, Gods and Dogs (June 28, 2025, Staatsoper Unter den Linden), Jiří Kylián tells of the madness of the individual, while Crystal Pite lets the dancing bodies become a symbol of human impermanence and vitality. As a guest performance, the Nederlands Dans Theater can be experienced with a multi-part evening by Crystal Pite and Simon McBurney (July 2025, Deutsche Oper Berlin).
