The first special exhibition in the newly opened Rieckhallen presents the first institutional solo exhibition in Germany by US artist Mark Bradford with large-format paintings, sculptures and video installations on topics such as race, gender and economic inequality. The new Rieckhallen studio for workshops with groups also invites individual visitors as a free area.

About the artist

Mark Bradford (born 1961) is holding his first solo exhibition in Germany in the reopened Rieckhallen. The exhibition features painting, sculpture, installation and video on social themes such as violence and urban life. Bradford’s impressive visual compositions serve as guides for urban memories. His characteristic large-format paintings are made from found materials, mostly from his hometown of Los Angeles.

His diverse artistic practice is dedicated to themes such as race, gender and economic inequality. The paintings on the role of railway stations at the time of the “Great Migration” in the United States also refer to the historical function of the museum building as a railway station between Berlin and Hamburg. While Bradford’s sculptural installations physically integrate visitors into the exhibition space, the sound and video works convey his artistic voice.
