CHART announces the full public program for its 2024 edition – Kunsthal Charlottenborg | 29.08.-01.09.2024

Editors’ Choice

CHART, the leading Nordic contemporary art event, announces further details of its public program for the twelfth edition of the fair, which will take place at Kunsthal Charlottenborg from 29 August to 1 September 2024. CHART 2024 focuses on high-quality, curated presentations and brings together 36 exhibitors from across the Nordic region, showing works by more than 150 artists. In addition to the art fair, this year’s edition features the first book and print fair, a large architecture pavilion to celebrate the 10th anniversary of CHART Architecture, a free exhibition of works under DKK 20,000 to encourage first-time buyers and make the collecting process more transparent, a brand new exhibition of site-specific works in the Tivoli Gardens, which will be on view from August 29 to September 22, 2024, and a new program of talks, performances, screenings and live music. The full public program of events is now available on the CHART website.

CHART brings together exhibitors from across the Nordic region, creating a one-stop shop for the best of the regional gallery scene. As a non-profit foundation, CHART is committed to connecting and expanding the Nordic art community through curated initiatives, promoting sustainability and Nordic aesthetics in all its diversity.

This year’s edition is themed ‘New Voices in the Nordics’ and shines a spotlight on the people and ideas whose influence is growing in the Nordic art scene today. The program highlights artists exploring groundbreaking ideas and materials, new galleries providing a platform for these approaches, institutions rethinking their role, and collectors rethinking what it means to collect contemporary art in our current social climate.

Curated presentations by a new group of emerging and established galleries

The art fair brings together 36 exhibitors from across the Nordic region, including new galleries such as CFHILL, Coulisse Gallery and Wilson Saplana Gallery, exhibiting at CHART for the first time, as well as Andréhn-Schiptjenko, STANDARD (OSLO) and OSL contemporary. Highlights include a new large-scale sculpture by Danish artist Nina Beier, co-presented by Croy Nielsen and STANDARD (OSLO), and a presentation of works by Greenlandic artist Inuuteq Storch, who is representing Denmark at the Biennale di Venezia 2024, alongside works by French artist Sophie Calle at Wilson Saplana Gallery. Andréhn-Schiptjenko presents a solo stand with works by the American sculptor Tony Matelli.

We celebrate 10 years of CHART Architecture

To mark the 10th anniversary of CHART Architecture, CHART will unveil a monumental architectural pavilion that will be installed in the courtyards of Charlottenborg for the duration of the fair. The pavilion has been specially designed as an alternative to the “white cube” gallery format and corresponds to the theme “Neo-Nordic Architecture”.

The pavilion will host ‘Start Collecting with CHART’, a new curated selling exhibition with contributions from all galleries participating in the fair, showcasing established international names alongside an emerging generation of ‘New Voices in the Northics’. The exhibition is free and open to the public. It features works priced below a fixed threshold of DKK 20,000 / EUR 2700 to make the process of collecting art transparent and encourage first-time buyers to start collecting.

The design of the pavilion, entitled “Breeze”, presents a compilation of natural local materials and is characterized by an open structure with a flexible wall system that provides exhibition space inside. In a nod to Danish cultural history, the pavilion’s roof consists of a sail roof that lets in daylight to illuminate the artworks on display while protecting visitors from the rain. The design was selected by a jury of experts following an open call for proposals in which teams of young architects were invited to submit proposals for the structure.

The exhibition provides an overview of the latest developments in the region’s art and architecture scene and explores how architectural space affects the way we encounter contemporary art. The project symbolizes CHART’s commitment to uniting the worlds of contemporary art and architecture. Parallel to the pavilion, the lecture program “Review/Revive Neo Nordic” will feature a discussion between one of the winners of CHART Architecture 2024 and this year’s competition jury, which will focus on the topic of “New Nordic Architecture”.

Julie Quottrup Silbermann, Director of CHART, says: “We are delighted to be celebrating the 10th anniversary of CHART Architecture this year with our most ambitious commission to date, building the largest pavilion yet, which will serve as an extended exhibition space at the fair for our show ‘Start Collecting with CHART’. We wanted to highlight the important role of architecture in the exhibition of contemporary art and the interplay between these two practices. This is an exciting milestone that underlines our ongoing commitment to innovation at the intersection of art and architecture.”

A brand new series of site-specific works at CHART in Tivoli

For the third consecutive year, CHART will present a new exhibition of site-specific artworks at the famous amusement park Tivoli Gardens from August 29 to September 22, 2024. CHART in Tivoli continues to challenge the traditional format of an art fair, bringing contemporary art to new audiences in unexpected places.

The exhibition features a monumental bronze sculpture by renowned Danish artist Per Kirkeby, which pays homage to Danish novelist and poet J.P. Jacobsen. Other highlights include a group of sculptures by Danish artist Rose Eken that stand as talismans for our deteriorating relationship with the earth, an interactive installation by Jacob Dahlgren consisting of several dartboards and darts, and a new series of body-sized marble sculptures by Julie Falk that reflect on themes such as medicalization and interconnectedness. The exhibition also features works by Anselm Reyle, David Nilson, Jens Settergren, Laura Guiseppi, Maria Rubinke, Matti Sumari, Michael Johansson, Morten Buch and Peter Frie.

Expansion of the program: book and print fair, talks, demonstrations, music and performances

CHART Book Fair returns to Festsalen in Charlottenborg, but with a new identity as CHART Book and Print Fair, with an expanded focus on limited edition prints and multiples. The fair presents a wide range of print products from leading publishers in the region, from photobooks, zines and lithographs to screenprints and monographs, providing a platform for the vibrant independent publishing world in the Nordic region.

This year’s lecture program features spotlight sessions with artists participating in this year’s art fair, including Nina Beier, Greenlandic artist Inuuteq Storch and photographer Trine Sondergaard, as well as American artist Marcus Leslie Singleton, known for his distinctive figurative portraits that are a meditation on ethnicity and representation. There will also be a program of panel discussions on topics such as “Ambiguous AI”, which explores the rise of AI technologies and their impact on the art world, with participants including curators Fatoş Üstek and Emilie Boe Bierlich, artist Arvida Byström and Rhizome co-executive director Michael Connor. Other highlights include ‘Advice for a budding collector’, discussing tips on building and maintaining an art collection with participants including renowned handball player Mikkel Hansen and CHART director Julie Quottrup Silbermann, and ‘Transcending the Human-Centric’, where artists and researchers will reflect on how art and technology can help us explore a speculative future beyond the Anthropocene.

The tradition of CHART’s generous public program continues with a new series of performances and live music in the courtyards of Charlottenborg, which are free and open to everyone. Highlights include a musical performance installation with Jenny Källman & Les Big Byrd exploring spatiality and group dynamics, a performance by Teo Ala-Ruona exploring the construction of identity inspired by men’s magazines, and a performance by middle-aged artist Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen displaying handwritten signs with direct messages. This year, CHART will also offer a series of public performances taking place around Nyhavn and Kongens Nytorv in the city center during CHART.
