The Friday evening of Berlin Art Week is all about the galleries. Even if some have already opened their exhibitions a few days earlier, they will all remain open until 10 pm for Gallery Night on 13 September 2024.

Edith Dekyndt’s performance at the Konrad Fischer Galerie on 13 September will kick things off. With Animal Methods, the Belgian artist analyses toxic substances from nature. In videos, textiles, objects and drawings, the artist experiments with hair, skin, plant juices and residues of all kinds, posing questions such as: Where do beauty and disgust merge?
Another event will take place on the opening evening in the Nordenhake Gallery, where the Mexican artist Iñaki Bonillas will talk about his working methods at 6.30 pm. In Horizons of the Possible, the artist explores the extent to which frames can become autonomous images. He uses four series as material, which deal with different interpretations of the horizon.
In 1992, John Baldessari stayed in Ahmedabad, India, at the invitation of a wealthy industrialist family. The series Ahmedabad 1992 on display at Sprüth Magers provides an insight into India in the 1990s from the perspective of the American guest. The artist combines his own photographs and snapshots with found visual material such as flyers and newspaper cuttings. In addition to this presentation of eclectic and partially overpainted collages, the gallery is showing a second exhibition in which the painter Oliver Bak takes us into fantastic and ghostly pictorial worlds.
Christoph Schlingensief died far too early 14 years ago. Since then, the absence of this fearlessly provocative artist, who was known for his radical and activist voice, has been widely felt; what would he have said about today’s political status quo? CRONE is dedicating a solo exhibition to the artist, curated by Anna Catharina Gebbers, featuring three of his major works as well as new and previously unpublished material. The title of the exhibition is derived from Schlingensief’s search for Germany, in which he travelled through cities and rural areas in search of a new German hero, a possible replacement for Wagner’s mythical Siegfried.
