On 12 and 13 July, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and BMW once again invite you to the open-air season finale with STAATSOPER FÜR ALLE on Bebelplatz on the days before the final match of the European Football Championship. The 18th edition of STAATSOPER FÜR ALLE is under the patronage of Kai Wegner, Governing Mayor of Berlin. The open-air event will be hosted by journalist and presenter Petra Gute.

The STAATSOPER FÜR ALLE weekend starts on Friday 12 July at 5.30 pm with a sing along! Under the motto “You’ll never sing alone”, everyone is invited to a warm-up on Bebelplatz to sing famous football hits and anthems together. The event is part of the FOOTBALL CULTURE SUMMER Berlin 2024 and is being organised in cooperation with Kulturprojekte Berlin.

From 19:00, the performance of Marc-André Dalbavie’s latest opera MELANCHOLIE DES WIDERSTANDS will be broadcast live from the opera house to Bebelplatz. Based on the novel of the same name by Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai, director David Marton is staging this new work as a cinematic opera in close collaboration with video artist Chris Kondek. This live work of art brings together techniques from musical theatre and cinema: Using film as a medium, David Marton and Chris Kondek intend to bring the impressive, detailed and reflective literary descriptions of the characters and their habitats to the large opera stage in all their intricacy. “This film aesthetic and the incredibly precise work of Marton and his team bring the story to life in a meaningful and sensual way. You are spellbound and tense every moment.” (Deutschlandfunk). The ensemble includes Tanja Ariane Baumgartner and Matthias Klink as the separated couple Angèle and Georges Esther, Sandrine Piau in the role of Rosi Pflaum and the countertenor Philippe Jaroussky, who can be heard as their son Valouchka in a particularly interesting role composed especially for him. The Staatskapelle Berlin will be conducted by Marie Jacquot.

On Friday between 18:00 – 19:00 there will also be the opportunity to report from the Red Carpet in front of the Unter den Linden Opera House. If you are interested, please confirm your participation including the number of persons at marieclaire.kozik@gmail.com. After confirmation you will receive a confirmation of participation.

For the finale of the concert season, STAATSOPER FÜR ALLE will perform a free live concert with the Staatskapelle Berlin on Bebelplatz on Saturday, 13 July from 20:00. The traditional open-air concert will be performed for the first time under the musical direction of the designated General Music Director Christian Thielemann. The programme includes Richard Wagner’s overture to “Tannhäuser und der Sängerkrieg auf Wartburg” and “Eine Alpensinfonie” op. 64 by Richard Strauss. In the “pre-programme” from 6 p.m., the Opera Children’s Orchestra, conducted by Giuseppe Mentuccia, and the Children’s Choir under the direction of Vinzenz Weissenburger, with Maria Kokareva as soloist, will perform works by Antonín Dvořák, Robert Schumann and Duke Ellington.

The concert will be livestreamed at www.staatsoper-berlin.de on 13 July and broadcast on rbb television on 14 July at 22:00. In addition, the performance of Melancholie des Widerstands will be broadcast on Radio3 vom rbb on 13 July at 20:03.

STAATSOPER FÜR ALLE has attracted well over half a million visitors since 2007 and has been the cornerstone of the long-standing partnership between the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and BMW for over a decade. Since the 2018/2019 season, the BMW Group has also been supporting the Staatsoper Unter den Linden as an official and global main partner with the exclusive digital partnership under the hashtag #BMWOPERANEXT. With the expansion of the streaming offer and an increased presence on social media, new, jointly developed formats are creating exciting insights into the world of opera and behind the scenes.
