Mark Bradford. Keep Walking – Rieckhallen im Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart | 06.09.2024-08.05.2025

On 6 September, after a 16-month break, the Rieckhallen at Hamburger Bahnhof will reopen for exhibitions after the unique complex was acquired by the state of Berlin in November 2022 and permanently secured for the public. Around 1,300 square metres in the front part of the Rieckhallen will be acquired and permanently secured for the public in 2022. In future, temporary special exhibitions will be shown in the front part of the Rieckhallen on approx. 1,300 square metres, while works of contemporary art from the Nationalgalerie collection will be presented in the rear part on approx. 1,500 square metres. This completes the Hamburger Bahnhof’s collection presentations of art from 1989 to the present day, alongside ‘Nationalgalerie. A Collection for the 21st Century’ in the west wing, “Joseph Beuys” in the Kleihueshalle and the site-specific artworks of the “Infinite Exhibition” in the indoor and outdoor areas of the museum. The first special exhibition in the newly occupied Rieckhalen is dedicated to US artist Mark Bradford, whose first institutional solo exhibition in Germany presents expansive paintings and sculptures on themes such as race, gender and economic inequality.

Mark Bradford (born 1961) is holding his first solo exhibition in Germany in the reopened Rieckhallen. The exhibition features painting, sculpture, installation and video on social themes such as violence and urban life. Bradford’s impressive visual compositions serve as guides for urban memories. His characteristic large-scale paintings are made from found materials, mostly from his hometown of Los Angeles. His diverse artistic practice is dedicated to themes such as race, gender and economic inequality. The paintings on the role of railway stations at the time of the ‘Great Migration’ in the United States also refer to the historical function of the museum. the historical function of the museum building as a railway station between Berlin and Hamburg. While Bradford’s sculptural installations physically integrate visitors into the exhibition space, the sound and video works convey his artistic voice. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue series of the
Hamburger Bahnhof catalogue series, published by Silvana Editoriale Milano. The exhibition is curated by Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath, Directors Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart.
