How can photography make the climate crisis visible – and what role does it play in this global challenge? In the summer workshop Klimax Climate for Photography (September 23-28, 2024) at Schloss Neuhardenberg, 12 students will work together with renowned professors Armin Linke (Academy of Fine Arts Munich), Heidi Specker (Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig), Tobias Zielony (Academy of Fine Arts Hamburg) and Thomas Weski to develop artistic approaches to document the effects of climate change in the Oderbruch region. The results will be presented on September 28 at 12 noon during a public discussion as part of an “open workshop”.

In the “Summer Workshop for Photography” from September 23-28, 2024, photography students and teachers from three universities – the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig, the Academy of Fine Arts Munich and the Academy of Fine Arts Hamburg – will meet at Schloss Neuhardenberg. Together, they will discuss and develop artistic contributions on what the climate crisis and the accompanying changes mean for artists, photographers and society. The worsening weather events give the “Summer Workshop” its title “Klimax Klima”.
What role can photography play in visualizing and addressing this crisis and how is it always part of the problem itself? Using the example of the Neuhardenberg park landscape and the Oderbruch landscape, the participants will use artistic means to investigate the direct consequences of climate change and how actors react to it. The artistic projects can deal with local problems, but also fundamentally with the climate crisis and its phenomena.
The group of 12 students will be supervised by the mentors Prof. Armin Linke (Academy of Fine Arts Munich), Prof. Heidi Specker (Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig) and Prof. Tobias Zielony (Academy of Fine Arts Hamburg) together with Prof. Thomas Weski. After the “summer workshop”, the joint discussion will be further developed artistically and presented in the form of an exhibition at Neuhardenberg Castle in the summer of 2025.
On September 28, 12 noon, the students will present their preliminary results to the public in an “Open Workshop” in the Great Hall of Neuhardenberg Castle. Admission is free.
The “Sommerwerkstatt” follows in the tradition of the “Werkstatt für Photographie”, founded by Berlin photographer Michael Schmidt in 1976 and existing until 1986, which was a field of experimentation beyond traditional training and political-institutional guidelines.
The “Summer Workshop” is organized by the Foundation for Photography and Media Art with the Michael Schmidt Archive and the Joachim Herz Foundation in cooperation with the Schloss Neuhardenberg Foundation.
