The museum no longer remains confined within its walls: it ventures outdoors, connects with the city, and becomes a vibrant meeting place. With BUNTES GARTEN CIAO (Colorful Garden Ciao), the Lenbachhaus presents an open and participatory art project from April 23 to August 30, 2026, that incorporates the garden, the forecourt, and the surrounding area. Throughout the summer, art, nature, and social engagement intertwine to create a diverse program that invites visitors to rethink public space and imagine more inclusive, sustainable, and communal forms of living together.

The museum can also take place outdoors. With BUNTES GARTEN CIAO, the Lenbachhaus moves into the garden, the forecourt, and the surrounding area, creating new encounters through art.
In the summer of 2026, a variety of events will take place around the Lenbachhaus, including performances, workshops, walks, dance events, theatre, karaoke, and social gatherings over coffee. The program emerges from a desire for colorful, diverse, solidaristic, accessible, climate-conscious, and queer forms of creative growth.

We take a look into the garden: spotted beings hang from ropes and communicate with the earth—both the acrobats and the microbiome are under threat. Cyberfeminist witches murmur against the exploitation of natural resources. In one corner of the garden, party guests sing plant karaoke, while a climate activist listens to the sounds of disappearing trees. What happens in shared public space yet remains hidden from view?

At the same time, the long-term redesign of the forecourt begins. We start right at our own doorstep, as there is currently very little shade and seating—though there is now a wonderful public bookcase for everyone. As part of BUNTES GARTEN CIAO, shaded water benches and a fountain will be added.
Come by—free of charge, for everyone, and outdoors!
