Lisenka Heijboer Castañón was awarded the Götz Friedrich Prize 2023/24 for her production of John Adams at the Volksoper Wien.

The Götz Friedrich Prize for the 2023/24 season was awarded on 16 October 2024 to Lisenka Heijboer Castañón for her production of John Adams’ THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO THE OTHER MARY at the Vienna Volksoper. The director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Dietmar Schwarz, presented the 5,000 euro prize to the Dutch-Peruvian director at a ceremony. The jury members Andrea Moses (Opera Director of the National Theatre Weimar) and Jörg Königsdorf (Chief Dramaturg of the Deutsche Oper Berlin) were responsible for presenting the award.
For over twenty years, the Götz Friedrich Prize has been one of the most important institutions for the promotion of outstanding talent in the field of music theatre directing – prizewinners such as Stefan Herheim, Nadja Loschky and Sebastian Baumgarten are just a few examples. It honours talented directors under the age of 35. After being organised by the German-Language Opera Conference in recent years, the Götz Friedrich Prize has returned to the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the main venue of its dedicatee, since the 2022/2023 season. The Götz Friedrich Prize is financially supported by the Friends of the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
Die niederländisch-peruanische Regisseurin Lisenka Heijboer Castañón debütierte 2020 auf der großen Bühne der Niederländischen Nationaloper Amsterdam mit der Uraufführung FAUST (WORKING TITLE) und wurde im Anschluss an diesen Erfolg 2022 mit der Regie für das Musiktheaterprojekt I HAVE MISSED YOU FOREVER im Rahmen des Amsterdamer Festivals Opera forward betraut. Ebenfalls 2022 inszenierte sie (gemeinsam mit Zack Winokur) die Neuproduktion von TRISTAN UND ISOLDE an der Oper Santa Fé und KLASSIKERMASCHINE: DON GIOVANNI am Theater Basel. Heijboer Castanón sammelte Bühnenerfahrungen als Assistentin von Regisseuren wie Pierre Audi, Krzysztof Warlikowski, Laurent Pelly und Lotte de Beer, mit der sie auch als Co-Regisseurin zusammengearbeitet hat. In der Spielzeit 2019/20 war sie zudem Directing Fellow of the Vocal Arts Department an der Juillard School New York.
