Editors’ Choice

Tomorrow, 9 November 2024, marks the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall – a significant moment in Berlin’s history and a symbol of freedom that will be commemorated again this year with numerous activities and celebrations throughout the city. To mark this special anniversary, the LICHTGRENZE , which ten years ago was at the centre of the celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, will be remembered for uniting thousands of people in a moving moment of remembrance and hope.

Brought to life by brothers Christopher Bauder and Marc Bauder, the LICHTGRENZE traced the course of the Berlin Wall over 15.3 kilometres from 7 to 9 November 2014 through thousands of illuminated balloons – a powerful tribute to the history that changed the city. The installation ran from Bornholmer Strasse to Oberbaumbrücke, passing important sites such as Mauerpark, the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse and the Brandenburg Gate.

Christopher Bauder: “The LICHTGRENZE was an abstract marking of the former course of the Wall, consisting only of air and light. We wanted to contrast the heaviness, solidity and permanence of the original structure with a light, permeable and, above all, temporary memorial installation.”

This impressive display, supported by the Robert Havemann Society and realised by Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH, made it possible to make the former division of the city tangible for a moment. The LICHTGRENZE was realised by Christopher Bauder’s WHITEvoid studio.
