Up to the Island! Summer Programme 2022 of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin | 07.07.- 21.08.2022

Editors’ Choice

During the summer holidays, the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin offer a varied programme for families, young people and adults. The focus of the activities is the Museumsinsel Berlin: starting from the Kolonnadenhof and Haus Bastian, the museums are explored. In the open air and with plenty of space, in small groups and in family groups, participants explore the themes of the collections. The Kolonnaden Bar invites you to evening talks on the Museumsinsel. Other events take place at the Kulturforum, the Hamburger Bahnhof, the Museum of Photography and the Museum of European Cultures.

Unless otherwise stated, the events take place weekly. The number of participants is limited. Online booking is required in advance. Admission to the museums is free for children and young people up to the age of 18.

Out into the studio!
Activities for families

The Kolonnadenhof on Berlin’s Museum Island, the sculpture garden of the Neue Nationalgalerie and the outdoor areas of the Hamburger Bahnhof and the Museum of European Cultures will become open-air studios. At family tables, people draw and paint, model and sculpt, collage and print. The artworks and objects in the museums will provide inspiration. The activities start every hour, last 120 minutes, take place first in the museums and then in the open-air studio.

Into the studio!
Workshops for families

In the large workshop rooms of Haus Bastian, everything revolves around the theme of plants. What is the significance of plants in paintings? How do they form patterns and ornaments? Children with and without disabilities and their adult companions create expressive flower collages and colourful sample sheets.

Workshops for adults

How is a woodcut made? Guided by an artist, you will try out the possibilities of the oldest letterpress technique in the world. You will cut your own motif in wood and print a small edition on paper.

Workshops for adults

Use the summer holidays to brush up your drawing skills! The Museum Island offers a variety of drawing opportunities: classical architecture, people in action, parks and cityscapes. Artists will be on hand to help you experiment with different drawing materials.

Workshops for adults

Creative writing inspired by works by Joseph Beuys: Write your own texts in the outdoor area of the Hamburger Bahnhof. Artists give professional tips.

Workshops for adults

Painting in the open air, in one of the most beautiful places in the city: inspiration for your plein air experiments will be provided by the works of art of the Impressionists in the Alte Nationalgalerie. Artists will be on hand to help you try out different techniques.

Saturdays: Photography!
Workshops for adults

The city is full of impressive motifs. But how do you take really good photos? Get professional tips on a photo walk through Charlottenburg.

Two on the island
Visitors get to talk to staff members of the National Museums in Berlin. Learn about the directors’ favourite works, the curators’ passions and the conservators’ skills. Ask the questions you’ve always wanted to ask.

Island Tour
The Museum Island Berlin unites five outstanding museum buildings of the 19th and early 20th centuries as well as the newly built James Simon Gallery to form a unique ensemble. The tour is dedicated to the history of the site and leads to architecturally striking places.

Kolonnaden Bar
The Kolonnaden Bar invites you to the Kolonnadenhof of the Museumsinsel Berlin with talks, DJ sets and cool drinks. Moderated by Julia Vismann, art historians meet fashion designers, actors, activists and other professions. Starting from the museums and artworks, they will discuss different facets of community. DJs will play after the talk.

Around the Hamburger Bahnhof
The Hamburger Bahnhof has a chequered history – as a station and museum building. What happened from its opening in 1847 until today? What can the building and its surroundings tell us about its history? The tour is dedicated to the architecture and history of the building and includes stops at artworks outside.

OFFERS FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE
With plenty of time and together with other children and young people, you can explore the museums and give free rein to your creativity. Artists will give you tips on how to design your photos, posters, prints or woven works. Every week there is a different theme to choose from.

My thing! My Museum!
Workshop for children aged 6 – 9

Imagine you could build your own museum. You bring a favourite thing with you and choose artworks in the Bode Museum that match it. What connections do you find between your object and the objects in the museum? What stories can you think of? You build a model out of cardboard and fill it with sculptures you have drawn and modelled – your museum.

Into the cool water!
Workshop for children aged 6 – 9

A holiday without art is like a holiday without bathing fun! Come along to the painting gallery and discover pictures of bathers, sea gods and brave seafarers. But beware – a sea monster is also spotted! You will make your own watercolours, sketch, wash and create your own watercolour using the layering technique and tracing paper.

Wild Bonds. Devour, move, bring together
Workshop for children aged 8 – 12

You conquer the museum garden and the exhibition “All Hands On: Weaving” and leave wild weavings on trees and lantern poles. You create new niches that invite you to chill out. In three workshops you can try your hand and find out what you can weave with: Wool, paper, wood or grass? Weave what you can and create friendship bracelets with colourful patterns, bowls in crazy shapes, little caves, sunshades and much more – in cooperation with Jugend im Museum e.V.

Berlin higgledy-piggledy
Workshop for children aged 9 – 12

There are many stories hidden beneath the Berlin you know. Archaeologists have unearthed things from times long past: an elk from the Stone Age, the gilded equipment of a knight or old silver cutlery. You can discover and explore this and much more in the Neues Museum. And what do these old things have to do with you? Maybe there are archaeological finds in your neighbourhood? In the workshop, you’ll design your own Berlin map with different layers from the past to the present.

Under the magnifying glass: leaf by leaf!
Workshop for children aged 9 – 12

The Pergamon Museum is full of blossoms, greenery and sprouts: on wooden panels, vases, tiles and carpets you will find plants with large leaves, beautiful flowers, sweet fruits and wild spiral vines. You wander through the museum and go on a discovery tour in the outdoor area. With the help of a plant identification app, a pocket microscope and a camera, you will learn to identify plants on the objects and in our gardens. You will record your findings in a field diary.

Garden fantasies
Workshop for children aged 9 – 12

There’s plenty of room for your ideas in the pleasure garden in front of the Altes Museum! Chilling, bladening, chatting – what would you most like to do in a public garden? What should it look like? Who are your superheroes that you would like to erect as statues? In the Altes Museum you will get to know famous garden figures from antiquity. With a pencil and camera, you will explore the gardens of the Museum Island. Together with others, you will build a model of a garden you would like to see.

Tolerance: Design
Workshop for young people aged 13 and over

What does tolerance mean and what does tolerance look like? What do acceptance and participation mean in everyday life? In the special exhibition “Studio Tolerance” of the Art Library, you will get to know posters by international designers. Together with others, you will discuss tolerance and design a poster in a team. You will learn about the history of poster art as well as printing and collage techniques.

Are there differences between painted and photographed portraits? How do people photograph themselves today? How were they portrayed in paintings in the past? You will create photo portraits and compare them with portraits in the collections on the Museum Island. Then you paint your own portrait.

Media, Power and Resistance
Workshop for young people aged 13 and over

What role do digital media play in reporting? Where do contradictions of ideal and reality meet? What is important to you? Based on Barbara Kruger’s textual and filmic statements in the special exhibition “Bitte lachen / Please cry”, you will explore how opinions can be expressed with visual intensity and how contradictions can be unveiled. You collect creative statements in digital and public space and express your opinion artistically – as a poster, print or moving image.

#woodcut
Workshop for young people aged 13 and over

Do you enjoy printing with the oldest technique? The woodcut is still used today by artists all over the world. Let yourself be inspired by the works in the special exhibition “Woodcut. 1400 to today” in the Kupferstichkabinett and develop your own motif. You cut your ideas into the wood panel and print, overprint, change and combine.

Out and Out: Architecture with and without People
Workshop for young people aged 13 and over

Inspired by photographs from the special exhibition “Image and Space. Candida Höfer in dialogue with the photography collection of the Art Library”, you will explore the architecture of public buildings and spaces. You focus on architectural details or the relationship between people and space. You compare your photographs with historical photographs. A photographer will support you in creating your motifs and give you tips on how to use your personal camera.

Art Listening Pieces
Workshop for young people aged 13 and over

Do you like listening to radio plays and are you interested in art? Then this is the right workshop for you! Inspired by the works of Andy Warhol, Keith Haring or Joseph Beuys, you will develop your own story. You write the script, collect sounds and edit your own radio play from it. A radio play author and a sound designer support you in the process. Which topic do you choose?
