The Museums Directorate of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar is one of 15 selected art and cultural institutions worldwide to receive grants totalling almost $1.3 million from the Getty Foundation as part of the “Paper Project” initiative. The Los Angeles-based institution uses its grants to support exhibitions, publications, digital projects and workshops that explore innovative methods for researching and preserving art on paper.

Thanks to the funding, the Foundation will organise an international workshop next year on the latest art technological methods for the examination of drawings with young scientists and experienced specialists. Under the title “Between Connoisseurship and Science. New Demands on Research and Curatorship of Drawings”, the focus will be on case studies from the wide-ranging graphic collections of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar: works by Rembrandt and his circle will be examined as well as works by Bauhaus artists or drawings by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

“The advances made in recent years in the technical analysis of drawings present curators of art on paper with special challenges, but at the same time offer exciting new possibilities,” says Christoph Orth, Custodian of the Graphic Collections at the Klassik Stiftung Weimar. “The support of the Getty Foundation will give us the opportunity to explore the field of tension between scientific research methods and art-historical-historical approaches in order to develop new perspectives for drawing research.” Last but not least, the promotion of young scholars and further international networking will be in the foreground, as museum director Annette Ludwig emphasises: “We are delighted about the funding from the Getty Foundation, as it offers us the opportunity to strengthen the museums of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar with their unique collections as a forum for worldwide scholarly exchange and innovative curatorial work.”

Launched in 2018, the Getty Foundation’s Paper Project funds a wide range of projects by ambitious institutions around the world working with prints and drawings. One focus is on supporting young curators in their professional development. Together with the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, the Klassik Stiftung Weimar is one of the first German cultural institutions to receive funding from the Getty Foundation within this framework.
