Hrair Sarkissian: The Other Side of Silence – Bonnefantenmuseum | 29.11.2022-14.05.2023

Editors’ Choice

With Hrair Sarkissian: The Other Side of Silence, the Bonnefantenmuseum presents the first retrospective in the Netherlands of one of the leading contemporary conceptual photographers. The Syrian-Armenian artist Hrair Sarkissian (*1973, Damascus) is known for his life-size photographs in which he exposes the wounds of conflict and war.

The exhibition will feature key works by the photographer from the last 15 years. A new, never-before-seen Bonnefanten Museum commission Sweet and Sour (2022) is one of his most personal works to date and will be on view for the first time. The exhibition offers the most comprehensive presentation of many of the artist’s most significant works created since 2006, including his personal exploration of his Armenian heritage in In Between (2006). In his conceptual photography, Sarkissian explores how historical moments are narrated, disseminated and transmitted in controversial and very different ways.

The audience is taken on an extended journey across public squares in Aleppo, Latakia and Damascus, through the skies over Palmyra and across the snowy post-industrial landscapes of present-day Armenia.

The Bonnefantenmuseum has included the work Final Flight (2018-2019) in their collection and commissioned the work Sweet and Sour (2022).
