Works of art have always adorned the corridors and offices of Schering AG and later Bayer AG at the Berlin site. Many of these works were part of the art collection of the Ernst Schering Foundation and will be on sale at the Grisebach auction house in Berlin-Charlottenburg from 10 February to 11 March. Art enthusiasts are invited to this last opportunity to view this collection in its entirety and discover works by West Berlin artists* from the 1960s to the 1990s.

Schering AG considered it an important task to support the cultural and artistic life of Berlin and especially West Berlin in many ways during the years of German-German division. With regular exhibitions by the Ernst Schering Art Association, thematic hangings in the corridors and meeting rooms of the company building, and a steadily growing Artothek, an important contribution was made to the city’s art scene.
The development of the art collection of the Ernst Schering Foundation came to an end with the takeover by Bayer AG in 2006. The works were integrated into the Bayer Artothek and could be borrowed by employees.
The decision to part with this legacy was not an easy one. However, since its establishment, the Ernst Schering Foundation has placed pioneering work in the scientific and cultural fields at the centre of its activities. Thus, the proceeds from the sale are to flow into new, innovative projects that benefit Berlin’s contemporary art scene.
Some high-priced works have already been sold in the winter auction of the Grisebach auction house. The works shown in the exhibition, on the other hand, are predominantly in a very low price segment for the art market of less than € 3,000. Art enthusiasts are invited to look and browse – also during the festive exhibition opening on 9 February from 6 pm.
