This exhibition is the first to show in its entirety the long-term permanent loan of around 100 works from the artist Gerhard Richter by the Gerhard Richter Kunststiftung to the Neue Nationalgalerie.

The central work of the exhibition is the cycle “Birkenau” (2014), consisting of four large-format abstract paintings. It is the result of Gerhard Richter’s long and deep engagement with the Holocaust and its representability. In addition to the Birkenau cycle, nearly 90 other works by the artist from several creative phases since the 1980s will be on view, including “Occupied House” (1989), “6 Standing Discs” (2002) and “4,900 Colors” (2007). A large group also includes works from the important group of overpainted photographs, in which Richter addresses the field of tension between photography and painting on a new level.
In 2021, Gerhard Richter has given the National Gallery an extensive collection of 100 works for the Museum of the 20th Century at the Kulturforum as a long-term permanent loan.
Beginning in April 2023, the works will initially be on view in the Graphic Cabinet of the New National Gallery, and in the future will be shown in a separate room dedicated to the artist on the upper floor of the Museum of the 20th Century, which is currently under construction.
