Editors’ Choice

From 1 April 2023, the Neue Nationalgalerie will be showing two exhibitions by Tehching Hsieh and Gerhard Richter in parallel. With his long-term performances, Tehching Hsieh has had a decisive influence on media and performance art since the 1970s, while Gerhard Richter has been influencing contemporary painting for decades with his pictorial ideas. Both exhibitions mark turning points in the 20th century’s understanding of art.

The Neue Nationalgalerie presents Tehching Hsieh’s work “One Year
Performance 1980-1981 (Time Clock Piece)”. Born in 1950 in Nanzhou, Pingtung, Taiwan, Tehching Hsieh became internationally known primarily for his long-term performances, each lasting a year, in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The film and photo installation at the Neue Nationalgalerie shows the performance in which the artist photographs himself operating a punch clock every hour for a year. The accompanying sleep and mobility deprivation put him into a kind of delirium, so that some shots failed.

At the end of the performance, Tehching produced a film of 24 photos per day x 365 days per year (8,760 in total), at a film speed of 24 frames per second, resulting in a 6-minute film that was exhibited at the Guggenheim New York in 2009 and will also be on view at the New National Gallery.
