The festival days 2023 will begin this Sunday (2 April) with the festival concert of the Staatskapelle Berlin. Jérémie Rhorer will conduct Beethoven’s “Missa solemnis” on 2 and 7 April in the Philharmonie, the first time he will be conducting the Staatskapelle Berlin. The soloists will be Camilla Nylund (soprano), Anna Kissjudit (alto), Saimir Pirgu (tenor) and René Pape (bass), as well as the Staatsoper Chorus, rehearsed by Martin Wright. The last performance of Beethoven’s “Missa solemnis” at the Berlin State Opera was more than 60 years ago, in February 1962, conducted by the then General Music Director Franz Konwitschny.
The centrepiece of the festival is the last cyclical performance of Wagner’s “Ring” tetralogy this season, under the musical direction of Thomas Guggeis.
In addition to performances of Beethoven’s monumental Mass setting, a piano recital with András Schiff on 9 April at 11 am in the Philharmonie’s Great Hall is part of the FESTTGE programme. He will devote himself to works by Bach and Beethoven.
The Opera Children’s Orchestra, which has been in existence since 2018 and is a cooperation with the twelve district music schools, will perform on 7 April as part of festival 2023 under the musical direction of Giuseppe Mentuccia. The young musicians, aged 7 to 13, will perform excerpts from Georges Bizet’s opera CARMEN as a bridge to the opera programme of the season. The concert will be presented by Benjamin Stöwe. Natalia Skrycka (mezzo-soprano) and Carles Pachon (baritone) will perform as soloists with the young instrumentalists.
