Johannes Vermeer is the great unknown of Dutch painting. In his painting, he brought the invisible to light through the visible. The old master achieved an immediacy in the depiction of his protagonists that was unusual for the time and thus became a role model for a young contemporary generation of artists. The 17th meets the 21st century in the group exhibition “Vermeer Contemporary” from 25 August to 23 September 2023 (extended until 18 November), featuring 26 important contemporary positions. The exhibition, organised by the European Art Association in cooperation with DEEDS.NEWS – The Art Newspaper from Berlin at CSR.ART Contemporary Show Room, presents positions of today’s artists in a variety of ways with adapted elements from Vermeer’s art using their own artistic means.

Jan Vermeer (c. 1632-1675) was last on show in Germany in the large Dresden exhibition “Vom Innehalten” (until January 2022) in the Gemäldegalerie der Alten Meister in the Zwinger with around a quarter of his known complete oeuvre, before the world’s largest ever complete exhibition of the painter’s work in Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum (until June 2023) recently showed 28 of a total of 37 known paintings to around 650,000 visitors to the exhibition of the painter, who died prematurely at the age of 43.
The contemporary exhibition taking place in Berlin’s Mitte district is dedicated to the complete oeuvre. For the first time, it offers a look at all of the artist’s motifs in adaptations, reinterpretations and arrangements. The exhibition offers the entire spectrum of art: painting, assemblage, photography, video art, installation, sculpture, drawing and AI art.
The current important museum exhibitions in Dresden and Amsterdam have become the starting point for the European Art Association for a juxtaposition with famous works such as “Maid with Milk Jug” (1658/60), “Letter Writer and Maid” (1670) or “The Girl with the Pearl Earring” (1665) by internationally renowned contemporary artists who seek to engage with the paintings of the Dutch master in their work. These include Thomas Zipp, Jorinde Voigt, Armin Boehm, Anna Bogouchevskaia, Madeleine Boschan, Adam Bota, Thorsten Brinkmann, Tatjana Doll, Simone Haack, Eckart Hahn, Bettina Hauke, Gregor Hildebrandt, Verena Issel, Kiki Kausch, Jonathan Meese, Frank Nitsche, Justine Otto, Franziska Reinbothe, Eva Schlegel, Erik Schmidt, Joanna Skurska, Leszek Skurski, Annegret Soltau, Lubomir Typlt, Timm Ulrichs und VALIE EXPORT.
A publication is planned to accompany the exhibition. The exhibition “Vermeer Contemporary” will be accompanied by artist talks. BELOW the complete programme with all events accompanying the exhibition.
The European Art Association was founded in 2011 and has since realised numerous exhibition projects in the field of contemporary art in other European countries. Most recently, it realised the last institutional solo exhibition (2017) of Eberhard Havekost, who died at the age of 52, in Berlin during his lifetime in cooperation with the Austrian Cultural Forum.
