Editors’ Choice

Berlin Art Week, which takes place from 13 to 17 September 2023, presents the diversity of Berlin’s art scene in its twelfth edition with a wide-ranging festival programme that takes place in museums, art institutions, private collections, project spaces and galleries. This year, the focus is on various thematic areas, including representation, sustainability, digitalisation and war. National and international artists will provide deep insights into their work. To explore some of the more than 100 venues of Berlin Art Week in detail, a comprehensive range of tours will take visitors through the city’s various neighbourhoods.

This year’s Berlin Art Week 2023 is moving away from traditional exhibition methods and instead presenting special formats such as performances, sound installations, video screenings and much more. Exhibition projects question fundamental institutional policies of representation. Digitalisation also plays an important role, with a new digital stage at HAU Hebbel am Ufer and innovative use of artificial intelligence at Haus am Lützowplatz. This year’s focus is on special formats such as performances by Nina Beier and Bob Kil at Haus am Waldsee, special programmes at Hamburger Bahnhof and Neue Nationalgalerie, sound installations by Memory Biwa and Robert Machiri at ifa-Galerie Berlin, and video screenings by Young-jun Tak at Julia Stoschek Foundation. In keeping with this, exhibition projects such as ‘House of Kai’ at the Neue Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst (nGbK), Coca Fusco’s ‘Tomorrow, 1 Will Become an Island’ at the KW Institute for Contemporary Art, and a special programme on ‘0 Quilombismo’ at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt question the fundamental institutional politics of representation.

Cooperative projects between Schinkel Pavillon and Brücke Museum, or daadgalerie, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein and Galerie im Körnerpark deal with historical and contemporary reflections on war and artistic practices during the Cold War. Around 50 Berlin galleries are participating with exhibitions and openings, underscoring Berlin’s position as an international art market location. The Positions Berlin Art Fair is celebrating its 10th edition this year, and Berlin private collections are offering insights into their holdings.

Berlin Art Week 2023 will be expanded with the new section ‘BAW Featured,’ which has selected twelve special projects: Berlin Atonal at Kraftwerk Berlin, Between Bridges, BPA/ / Raum, CCA Berlin-Center for Contemporary Art, Fotografiska Berlin, Monopol-Berlin, Pickle Bar, Spore Initiative, The Fairest at Kühlhaus Berlin, Trauma Bar and Cinema, Videoart at Midnight, and Yellow Solo at R50. These projects reflect the artistic diversity and quality of the city and offer different art forms, themes, and perspectives. They complement the festival programme and enrich the Berlin Art Week experience for visitors and participants alike.

Berlin Art Week, which marks the start of the autumn art season, remains a vibrant celebration of Berlin’s diverse artistic landscape and demonstrates how the capital city serves as a mirror of a culturally progressive and liberal society.
