New opening hours at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin from 16 April 2024

Editors’ Choice

Many of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin’s museums will change their opening hours from 16 April 2024. There will be an additional closing day and shorter opening hours. This is due to the tight budget situation. In some cases, however, opening hours will also be extended from summer 2024 in order to give more visibility to special exhibitions that are particularly attractive to visitors and are therefore very popular.

Changed opening hours

The following stores will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays from 16 April 2024 and some will reduce their opening hours at times of day that were previously less busy:

  • Bode-Museum
  • Friedrichswerdersche Kirche
  • Kunstbibliothek (Ausstellungssaal)
  • Kupferstichkabinett (Ausstellungssaal)
  • Kunstgewerbemuseum
  • Museum Europäischer Kulturen
  • Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg
  • Schloss Köpenick

Registered school classes will continue to be welcomed at the Altes Museum and the Bode Museum on Tuesday.

Altes Museum, Bode-Museum and Friedrichswerdersche Kirche open Wednesday to Friday from 10 am to 5 pm (previously: 6 pm), Saturday and Sunday as before from 10 am to 6 pm. These opening hours also apply to the exhibitions at the Art Library at the Kulturforum.

The Kupferstichkabinett and the Kunstgewerbemuseum will be open Wednesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (previously: 6 p.m.), on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. as before. The same opening hours apply to the Museum of European Cultures.

The Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg in Charlottenburg is open Wednesday to Sunday from 11am to 6pm.

Unchanged opening hours

There will be no changes to the regular opening hours of the following houses:

  • Alte Nationalgalerie
  • Gemäldegalerie
  • Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart
  • Museum für Fotografie
  • Pergamonmuseum. Das Panorama
  • Neue Nationalgalerie.

The long Thursday evenings until 8pm at the Neue Nationalgalerie, the Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart and the Museum für Fotografie will also remain unchanged. The library operations of the Art Library and the study rooms of the Kupferstichkabinett, Münzkabinett and Art Library are also unaffected by the changed opening hours. The Neues Museum and James-Simon-Galerie will remain open from Tuesday to Sunday, but only until 6 p.m. on Thursdays.

Extended opening hours from summer 2024

From 5 May to 4 August 2024, the Alte Nationalgalerie will also be open until 8 pm from Thursday to Saturday. For one month, between 4 July and 4 August 2024, it will also open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays until 8 pm. This is to accommodate the expected visitor interest in the special exhibition “Caspar David Friedrich: Infinite Landscapes” (19 April to 4 August 2024).

The same opening hours, including late opening from Tuesday to Saturday, will also apply to the Neues Museum and the James-Simon-Galerie – also from 4 July, but until 1 September 2024.

From April to September, Schloss Köpenick also opens its doors on Wednesdays and welcomes guests from Wednesday to Friday from 11 am to 5 pm and at weekends from 11 am to 6 pm. From October to March, the palace is open from Thursday to Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm as before.
