The theme of the exhibition is the role of the Nationalgalerie in the rediscovery of Friedrich at the beginning of the 20th century. A comprehensive exhibition on Caspar David Friedrich is long overdue in Berlin. The Nationalgalerie houses one of the largest collections of Friedrich paintings in the world and numerous acquisitions and presentations in the Prussian capital during the artist’s lifetime contributed to his early fame. After the painter had fallen into oblivion in the second half of the 19th century, the Nationalgalerie honoured the artist more comprehensively than ever before with the “German Century Exhibition” in 1906 with 93 works. Friedrich was celebrated as an outstanding painter of light and atmosphere and as a pioneer of modernism. The rediscovery of the Romantic artist through the “German Centennial Exhibition” is illustrated by the current exhibition with the presentation of almost half of his masterpieces shown there.
