Gabriele Horn has headed the Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art since 2002, while she was also Director of KW Institute for Contemporary Art from 2004 to 2016. She was responsible for a total of ten editions of the Berlin Biennale, while Gabriele Horn was instrumental in ensuring its institutional stability in addition to anchoring and networking the Berlin Biennale both locally and internationally. Under her leadership, the Berlin Biennale, whose first edition in 1998 was initially a mere assertion, became an artistic and programmatic reality in the city from the fourth edition and the associated funding from the Federal Cultural Foundation as a top cultural institution in Germany.

Krist Gruijthuijsen has been director of KW Institute for Contemporary Art since taking office in July 2016. His curatorial ideas have made a decisive contribution to the diversification of KW’s programme in recent years, while his commitment to discursive formats has also led to stronger local and international networking at KW. Under Gruijthuijsen’s leadership, KW has significantly increased its international significance, visitor numbers and financial resources. The programme has taken up and strengthened numerous historical and contemporary artistic positions. Together with his curatorial team, Krist Gruijthuijsen will continue to be responsible for the museum’s exhibition and event programme until the end of the year.

KW has been managed by Emma Enderby since 15 May 2024. Axel Wieder succeeds Gabriele Horn as Director of the Berlin Biennale on 1 August 2024.
