Renate von Mangoldt: Berlin Revisited ZeitSprünge 1972–1987 / 2021–2023 – Museum für Fotografie| 28.06–01.09.2024

Editors’ Choice

The exhibition brings together photographic leaps through time in gripping pairings full of humor and melancholy. The black-and-white photographs from West Berlin in the 1970s and 80s are juxtaposed with color photographs from 2021 to 2023 in the reunified city. It is street photography in the best sense of the word, taken in the midst of crowds of passers-by, changing moments and motifs. Sometimes actually photographed anew in one and the same place, mostly freely improvising on a black and white theme.
However, Renate von Mangoldt, who has made a name for herself primarily as a portrait photographer of writers, always focuses on people.

“Because the photos relate to each other in many ways. Not only in terms of content and location, but also formally. Only together do they unfold their power. They tell of time and tell a story themselves. How the world has changed, how time has changed, how the city has changed, how people have changed!” (Renate von Mangoldt)
