With A land as big as her skin, the Bonnefanten Museum is dedicating its first comprehensive solo exhibition to the Lebanese-Dutch artist Mounira Al Solh (*1978, Beirut) from 7 June 2025.

In her works, she combines key themes of our time – feminism, forced migration, trauma, cultural identity and memory – with an artistic expression that is as powerful as it is playful. Al Solh gained international attention with her contribution to the Lebanese pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2024 and at Artes Mundi 2023 in Cardiff.
The Bonnefanten Museum is presenting current works as well as new works created especially for the exhibition and large-format works by the Lebanese-Dutch artist, who is attracting increasing international attention.

The artist’s biographical and political background has had a lasting impact on her artistic work. Having grown up in Lebanon, a country characterised by civil war and considered to be both the cradle of ancient cultures and the scene of ongoing conflicts, the artist deals with experiences of violence, displacement and structural discrimination in her works. And yet her art is not heavy or oppressive. On the contrary, she succeeds in countering heaviness with lightness – with humour, colour and a deeply felt artistic clarity. For the artist, this is a right and a form of resistance.

Mounira Al Solh’s work defies simple categorisation. As an attentive observer and collector of stories, she moves between personal narratives and political realities. Her works are urgent, socially relevant confrontations and make visible experiences that rarely take centre stage.
