From 11 April 2025, an abandoned 4-star hotel in Berlin-Mitte will be transformed into an intense art experience for a few days: THE DARK ROOMS HOTEL. The initiator of this unique project is the group ‘The Dark Rooms’, which has been known for its extraordinary art events in Berlin since 2016. Their first exhibition took place in the former Willner Brewery in Pankow, where they presented works of art in the dark to draw visitors’ attention to the art. In the following years, the group realised projects such as the ‘LOST Art Festival’ (2017) and the exhibition series ‘Himmel unter Berlin’ (2022 and 2023). With the upcoming ‘The Dark Rooms Hotel’, they are continuing the tradition of transforming abandoned places into immersive art spaces.

The (currently still secret) hotel in Berlin-Mitte was also once full of life: People came and went, celebrated, loved, argued and dreamed. The now empty rooms still harbour these invisible stories. The artists around the initiators of The Dark Rooms pick up on this flair: Various light and sound installations by 15 international artists can be discovered on 9 levels of the hotel building.

Clara Sauer, co-initiator and press spokesperson: ‘The works on display tell stories that would otherwise remain hidden – topics that we miss and that our society seems to overlook. They will amaze, sometimes confuse and encourage us.’

The creators promise an almost immersive art experience. ‘The hotel becomes a time capsule. The silent corridors, with their thick, worn carpets, muffle footsteps and allow visitors to glide almost silently through the deserted corridors. The darkness sharpens the senses. Without any clear orientation, guests explore the levels, discovering hidden rooms containing audiovisual installations time and again.’
Incidentally, this is the last opportunity to explore the old hotel: The building will be demolished shortly after the end of the exhibition.
Most of the works on show are premieres and are being presented in Berlin for the first time.
