The exhibition tour
“The retrospective at the Neue Nationalgalerie was the first comprehensive insight into the work of the American artist Nan Goldin (born 1953 in Washington D.C.) from 1980 to the present day. Her individual series of works were shown in the form of slide shows and films in pavilions designed by Hala Wardé in the upper hall of the Neue Nationalgalerie – each of these ‘buildings’ was conceived in relation to the respective series of works; together they formed a kind of village. After opening in Stockholm and Amsterdam, the exhibition travelled from Berlin to Milan (Pirelli Hangar Bicocca, 9 October 2025 – 15 February 2026) and Paris (Réunion des musées nationaux – Grand Palais, March – September 2026).”

The project
The exhibition includes the following works:Goldin’s magnum opus. „The Ballad of Sexual Dependency“ (1981-2022); „The Other Side“ (1992-2021), a historical portrait paying homage to the artist’s trans friends whom she photographed from 1972 to 2010; „Sisters, Saints and Sibyls“ (2004-2022), a testimony to the trauma of families and suicide; „Fire Leap“ (2010-2022), a foray into the world of children; „Memory Lost“ (2019-2021), a claustrophobic journey through drug withdrawal; and „Sirens“ (2019-2020), a trip into drug ecstasy.

Last Night: Extended opening hours and bar
On Friday, 4th April, and Saturday, 5 April 2025, the exhibition will be open four hours longer, from 8 pm to midnight. During this time, tickets will be available online and at the box office at a reduced price of 8 euros. Please note that the photographic and video works in the exhibition have a total running time of 149 minutes; there may be waiting times.

The Goldin Variations: An architectural recital by Hala Wardé
For the third stop of Nan Goldin’s exhibition tour, architect Hala Wardé (born 1965 in Beirut) has designed a unique dialogue between the architecture that houses the artist’s works and the iconic building by Mies van der Rohe. This dialogue goes beyond the Neue Nationalgalerie and creates a vision of a new urbanity in which the city is presented and represented.

In a public lecture on Sunday, 6 April 2025, from 6.15 to 7.15 pm, Hala Wardé will talk about her collaboration with Nan Goldin as well as the art of staging and dialogue – with other architectures, cities and landscapes – and the relationship between architecture and music.

The event will be held in English. Participation is free of charge. Seating capacity is limited. Registration is not required. Please note that the exhibition will officially close on 6 April 2025 at 6 pm; the exhibition will not be open during and after the lecture
